The National Police arrested two men who allegedly broke in to rob a home in Sa Vileta while its owner was hospitalised. They were caught hiding in the garden.
The National Police has detained two men as suspected perpetrators of a crime of burglary and damage to a home in the Palma neighbourhood of Sa Vileta. The events occurred on Friday night, around 11:00 PM, when the owner's son received an alert from the security company monitoring the property.
The video surveillance system had captured two individuals with their faces covered and gloves inside the house. The owner, who was hospitalised, had left the home unoccupied, a circumstance that the suspects allegedly took advantage of to gain access by forcing the entrance gate.
According to initial investigations, the assailants ripped out the camera system to eliminate evidence, but the images had already been sent to the security company, which immediately alerted the family. The owner's son headed to the residence while several patrols from the Citizen Attention Group (GAC) were dispatched to the location.
Upon arrival, the officers observed a motorcycle propped up next to the entrance and the forced gate, signs of a violent entry. During the perimeter inspection, they located the first suspect hiding behind a flowerpot, wearing white gloves and a full-face motorcycle helmet that covered his face, matching the description from the cameras.
Seconds later, they found the second man crouched among some brambles in the garden, also trying to remain unnoticed. Both were arrested on the spot and taken to police facilities to continue with the proceedings.
The detainees, who are Spanish nationals, face charges of burglary and damage. The swift police action prevented the robbery from being completed, although the material damages to the gate and the video surveillance system have yet to be quantified.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of homes whose owners are absent due to health reasons. The National Police recommends keeping security systems active and notifying trusted neighbours when being away for extended periods.
The case has been submitted to the Palma duty court, which will determine the precautionary measures for the detainees. The investigation remains open to clarify whether the suspects acted alone or were part of a network dedicated to such crimes.
Residents of Sa Vileta have expressed their concern for safety in the area, although police sources indicate that this is an isolated case. Citizen collaboration and alert systems were key in thwarting the attempt.
The owner, who remains hospitalised, has been informed of what happened and the arrest of the alleged perpetrators. His family has thanked the security company and the National Police for their swift response.
