The Mallorcan municipality of Algaida kicks off the Fiestas de Sant Jaume in July with a programme that pays tribute to the poet Blai Bonet on his centenary and celebrates the nine decades of CEIP Pare Bartomeu Pou.

The Mallorcan municipality of Algaida is preparing for a July filled with culture and tradition with the Fiestas de Sant Jaume 2026. The programme, presented by the Town Hall, focuses on historical memory and artistic dissemination, with two main themes: the centenary of the poet Blai Bonet and the ninety anniversary of CEIP Pare Bartomeu Pou. Activities will be spread across various points in the village, from the Town Hall to the Plaza, so that locals and visitors can enjoy a varied programme.

The centenary of Blai Bonet arrives at the Town Hall

The exhibition "De claror i de cor", dedicated to the poet from Santanyí Blai Bonet, will be inaugurated on 16 July at 18:30 in the Town Hall. The exhibition is part of the commemoration of his centenary and highlights his role as a renewing figure in 20th-century Catalan literature. According to the council, the exhibition aims to bring his work closer to a broad audience and to highlight his legacy.

At the same time, the auditorium of Casal Pere Capellà will host the presentation of the book SIN SOL mis eclipses favoritos, an essay by Marina de Cabo and Jaume Garcias Arrom, on 20 July at 19:00. The work includes a sound piece about the movement of celestial bodies during the solar eclipse expected in August 2026. The visual offer is completed with the photographic exhibitions L’Arxiu Balaguer in the art space Sa Peixateria and Un marc d’imatges by Miquel Cano Sastre at the Rectory.

90 years of CEIP Pare Bartomeu Pou: a journey through history

One of the highlights of the festivities is the recognition of the public school CEIP Pare Bartomeu Pou, which celebrates nine decades of history. The original building, designed by architect Guillem Forteza Pinya during the Second Republic, was initially named Luís Bello before adopting its current name. Historical teachers from the centre have emphasised the profound transformation of the institution, which has evolved from the Franco dictatorship to the current open model, based on co-education, secularism, and local roots. For the people of Algaida, the school is a symbol of the educational evolution of the town.

The programme includes commemorative events and activities open to the entire community, where the figure of Pare Bartomeu Pou, a Jesuit and Mallorcan philologist from the 18th century, will be remembered. The Town Hall encourages former students to participate in the events to share memories and celebrate this anniversary together.

Music, theatre, and tradition for all tastes

Live music will be the star of the festive nights. On 22 July at 21:00, the Plaza will host a concert of solidarity habaneras with the group Arpellots Havaneres Band. Entry requires a donation of 5 euros, which includes coca, ice cream, and burnt rum, benefiting the Fundación Campaner. Additionally, the Banda de Música d’Algaida along with singer Poli Bauzà will offer a pop concert that promises to liven up the evening.

Theatre will also have its place. On 25 July at 22:00, the local company Comediants d’Algaida will perform the play Una esposa per encàrrec, written by Lluís Velasco, in the square of Sitjar. Admission is free. And tradition will not be lacking: the Cossiers, the historic group of popular dances, will dance in the square of the church after making the Offering during the patronal mass. An unmissable event for lovers of local folklore.

The Town Hall of Algaida has ensured that these festivities have a strong cultural and participatory character, with activities for all ages. Locals will be able to enjoy a programme that combines historical memory with entertainment, in a festive atmosphere that reinforces the identity of the municipality. For those wishing to plan their visit, most events are outdoors and free of charge, except for the habaneras concert which requires a charitable donation.
