Three Moroccan youths have been arrested by the National Police after beating and attempting to rape a girl in Playa de Palma. The victim recognised them days later in the same area.
The National Police have detained three young men of Moroccan origin, just over twenty years old, as the alleged perpetrators of an attempted rape and physical assault on a girl in Playa de Palma. The events occurred in the early hours of 30 June, when the victim was walking along the beachfront of s'Arenal, near the border between Palma and Llucmajor.
Approach and dragging to the sand
According to police sources, around six in the morning, the three individuals approached the young woman while she was walking and attempted to engage her in conversation. When ignored, they unexpectedly grabbed her by the neck and dragged her to the sandy area. Once there, they tried to remove her trousers, which the Police classify as a clear attempt at rape.
The girl resisted strongly: she screamed and struggled against the attackers, who responded with punches and kicks to her face, while also subjecting her to sexual touching. Amid the commotion, the attackers chose to flee without completing the rape, leaving the victim with bruises on her face.
Report and key identification
That same day, the young woman filed a report at the National Police station, which opened an investigation to locate the attackers. The investigation was progressing without results until, last Tuesday, the victim recognised the three individuals in the same area of s'Arenal, while accompanied by a relative.
The relative managed to detain two of the suspects until a patrol from the Citizen Attention Group of the National Police arrived. The third individual initially escaped but was arrested shortly after. All three, residents of the s'Arenal area, have been charged with sexual assault and injury offences.
Consequences for safety in the area
The incident has reignited concerns about safety in Playa de Palma, one of the busiest tourist areas on the island. Locals and holidaymakers have expressed their unease over the recurrence of violent incidents along the promenade. The National Police have increased night surveillance in the area, especially at beach access points.
The young woman, who has received psychological support, hopes that the case will lead to stricter preventive measures in dark areas along the coast. The detainees remain in police custody awaiting their judicial appearance in the coming hours. They are charged with offences that could carry several years of imprisonment.
The National Police remind victims of sexual assaults of the importance of reporting immediately and not hesitating to seek help from passers-by. In the event of witnessing a similar situation, they recommend calling 091 or alerting the nearest officers.
