Mallorca Firefighters have extinguished an agricultural fire in Campos that threatened the rural hotel Es Migjorn. The fire, which was advancing towards the municipality, was extinguished around 18:30 hours.
Units from the fire stations in Felanitx, Llucmajor, and Inca were mobilised this afternoon in the municipality of Campos to tackle an agricultural fire declared in the area separating the town from Colònia de Sant Jordi. The incident occurred just hours after firefighters declared the fire in Son Servera under control, which had kept the Llevant region on edge since early morning.
The fire, 500 metres from the rural hotel Es Migjorn
The flames started near the rural hotel Es Migjorn, a facility located on the road connecting Campos with Colònia de Sant Jordi. According to Jonas Vollmer, the hotel director, the fire was about 500 metres from the building, but did not affect the facilities. "It’s very close but hasn’t affected the hotel; helicopters, the Police, and the Civil Guard are working; they seem to have it under control," Vollmer stated.
The main concern for the emergency services was the wind direction, which was pushing the flames towards the urban centre of Campos. "The problem is the wind, which is pushing it towards Campos," the hotel director added. Several homes on the outskirts of the municipality could have been exposed to the advancing fire.
Quick response from emergency services
The deployed operation included several fire engines, helicopters, and personnel from the Local Police and Civil Protection. Vollmer wanted to thank the promptness of the emergency services: "We were not in danger at any moment, and the truth is that the Local Police, Civil Protection, and firefighters arrived quickly with several vehicles. We can only congratulate them. They have shown excellent speed and precision in combating a fire in the countryside."
The hotel, for its part, activated preventive measures, although it was ultimately not necessary to evacuate guests. The fire moved away from the establishment and headed towards the agricultural area, where firefighters managed to contain it.
Extinguished at 18:30 hours
At around 18:30 hours on Friday, the communication department of Bombers de Mallorca confirmed that the fire had been extinguished. Cooling operations continue to prevent re-ignition, given the strong winds blowing in the area.
This new fire adds to the one recorded earlier that morning in Son Servera, which mobilised numerous units and has already been controlled. The accumulation of fires on the same day has tested the response capacity of the fire service, which has acted on both fronts simultaneously.
Authorities remind the importance of taking extra precautions in rural areas, especially during dry and windy periods, and to report any column of smoke immediately to 112.
