Palma City Council will rent air-conditioned cabins on Avenida de América to relocate the Local Police officers of les Meravelles, after serious structural and health deficiencies were confirmed in the police station.

The Local Police officers assigned to the les Meravelles office, in Platja de Palma, will have to work from portable cabins starting next Tuesday. Palma City Council has decided to install these provisional structures on Avenida de América after the Occupational Risk Prevention Service inspected the facilities on Friday and confirmed their severe deterioration.

The inspection, according to the ATAP union, revealed "extremely serious structural, electrical and health deficiencies" that will lead to a technical report recommending the closure of these premises. The basement, used as a changing room and rest area, did not meet the minimum stability conditions before props were placed to prevent further collapses.

Dampness, unprotected wiring and unbearable temperatures

The problems detected go far beyond a simple air conditioning failure, as pointed out by the Councillor for Citizen Security, Llorenç Bauzá, last Monday. The ATAP union reports widespread dampness, unprotected wiring, water accumulation from portable devices, and temperatures exceeding the limit of 27 degrees.

"The state of deterioration has reached such an extreme point that it has been necessary to place props to secure the structure," warned the CSIF union, which has appreciated the speed of the solution and the involvement of the summer reinforcement commanders and the head of the Local Police. The City Council will rent air-conditioned cabins with basic services so that the police can change and perform their duties under suitable conditions.

ATAP demands the closure of the basement and Bauzá's resignation

ATAP has not only denounced the deficiencies. The union demands the immediate closure of the basement and that the ground floor not be used until the electrical and air conditioning installations are repaired. Additionally, it has called for the resignation of Bauzá, whom they accuse of downplaying a situation that, in their opinion, endangered the officers and the trainees assigned to Platja de Palma.

"The established reality dismantles the attempt to downplay the issue," states ATAP, which had already filed a complaint last week alerting to "precariousness, unsanitary conditions, and physical risk." The union reminds that the councillor reduced the deficiencies to a problem with the air conditioning, when the inspection has shown that the problems are structural.

CSIF, for its part, has demanded that the measure of the cabins be "strictly temporary" and that Palma City Council undertake the necessary works to reform and adapt the police station as soon as possible. "We will not stop pressuring for the facilities to be fully operational and safe again," the union stated.

The residents of Platja de Palma and the officers themselves hope that this provisional solution does not last longer than necessary. The les Meravelles police station has been accumulating deficiencies for years, and the unions warn that the situation is unsustainable. The installation of the cabins, scheduled for Tuesday, is just a temporary fix while a definitive solution is sought.
