A fire declared this Friday at Fustería Xamena in Andratx, caused by a failure in the ventilation ducts, has mobilised the Bombers de Mallorca. The workers managed to escape unharmed and the fire was controlled in less than an hour.

The Bombers de Mallorca acted quickly this Friday to extinguish a fire declared at Fustería Xamena, a carpentry workshop located at number 6 on carrer de sa Font de la Vila, on the road connecting Andratx with s'Arracó. The alert was received at 1:50 PM and the fire was under control by 2:45 PM, according to the emergency services.

The fire originated from a failure in the ventilation ducts of the establishment, as confirmed by the Local Police of Andratx. At the time of the incident, several workers were inside, but all were able to leave the premises without physical harm. No injuries were reported.

Intervention of emergency services

Two vehicles from the Bombers de Mallorca were dispatched to the scene, working to prevent the flames from spreading to other areas. The Local Police of Andratx closed access from calle Cuba and cordoned off the perimeter to facilitate extinguishing efforts and ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles.

The rapid intervention prevented the fire from reaching other areas of the carpentry, which is dedicated to the manufacture and repair of furniture and other woodwork. The firefighters ventilated the premises to eliminate smoke and checked that no active hotspots remained.

Consequences and safety measures

The incident has highlighted the importance of maintaining ventilation systems in such workshops. The carpentry has suffered material damage in the area where the fire originated, although the extent has not yet been officially quantified. The workers, who assisted the firefighters, did not require medical assistance.

The Local Police have opened an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the failure, although all indications point to a problem in the electrical installation of the ducts. Neighbours in the area, alerted by the smoke, followed the agents' instructions and no additional incidents were reported.

For now, Fustería Xamena remains closed while cleaning tasks are carried out and damages are assessed. The Andratx Town Hall has reminded the obligation to periodically review ventilation systems in commercial and industrial premises to prevent such incidents.

The Bombers de Mallorca recommend that businesses with machinery that generates dust or shavings, such as carpentries, take extra precautions and keep ducts clean. If any anomalies are detected, a qualified professional should be contacted.
