A 52-year-old man, an employee of a hotel in Cala Mesquida, has died after being run over by a driver who fled the scene this Sunday in Capdepera. The Civil Guard is investigating the incident.
The town of Capdepera woke up this Sunday to a tragedy that has shocked its residents. A 52-year-old man, a worker at a local hotel, lost his life after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
The incident occurred around 7:30 AM on the road to Cala Mesquida, a busy route for hotel employees in the area. According to initial investigations, the driver was speeding when he ran over the victim, who was on his way to work at the time.
Discovery of the vehicle and the body
Local police officers from Capdepera located a black Volkswagen Polo TDI in a wooded area along the same road. The car had a shattered front windshield and traces of blood inside. After a search of the surrounding area, the officers found the victim's body about one hundred meters from the impact site.
The Mallorca fire brigade also arrived at the scene to recover the body, which had been dismembered in the violent collision. Inside the vehicle, the victim's leg and right arm were found.
Ongoing investigation
The Traffic Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation and is searching for the person responsible for the hit-and-run. Initial hypotheses suggest that the driver was speeding and fled the scene without providing assistance to the victim.
Emergency services from SAMU-061 attended the scene and confirmed the death. The body has been identified and transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Palma for an autopsy.
Reactions and road safety
The incident has caused great shock in Capdepera, where the victim was well-known for his work in the hotel sector. The Town Hall has expressed its condolences to the family and has requested public cooperation to locate the driver.
The road to Cala Mesquida, which lacks lighting in some sections and has curves, is used daily by hundreds of workers in the tourist area. This tragic accident has reopened the debate on road safety on rural roads in the municipality.
Authorities remind that abandoning a victim of an accident is a crime that can carry prison sentences of up to four years. The fleeing driver faces charges of reckless homicide and failure to provide assistance.
