The Civil Guard is investigating the death of a foreign tourist who was hit by a car while exercising on the road to Cala Mesquida. The driver, who went to work afterwards, was located after hiding the vehicle.

The driver, 35 years old, has been released on bail after giving a statement to the Traffic Civil Guard in Manacor. The agents are charging him with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident. The young man, a resident of Capdepera, was driving early in the morning to his job at a hotel in Cala Mesquida when he hit the tourist around 6:30 AM.

According to sources from the investigation, the driver did not stop after the impact and continued on to the hotel. Upon arrival, he called his cousin and they both returned to the scene to look for the victim. It was then that, according to his own account, they found a watch and, a few meters away, a severed arm and leg. They alerted emergency services around 7:00 AM.

Search among bushes with chainsaw

Patrols from the Local Police of Capdepera, the Traffic Civil Guard of Manacor, and Citizen Security, as well as several ambulances and units from SAMU 061, were dispatched to the accident site. The forensic doctor also attended the scene, a rare presence in traffic accidents that highlights the seriousness of the incident.

After more than two hours of searching, emergency teams located the tourist's body among some bushes, in a spot that was not visible from the road. The body had become trapped in the undergrowth, prompting the intervention of the Mallorca Fire Brigade. Two teams worked with a chainsaw to clear a path and free the body. The removal of the body took place at 11:30 AM.

The deceased, a foreign national, was on holiday in Mallorca with his wife. Based on his clothing, investigators suspect that he had gone out for a run or walk early in the morning, a common practice in the coastal area of Cala Mesquida.

The driver hid the vehicle

The driver, who suffered an anxiety attack and had to be treated on-site, had hidden the vehicle after the accident. However, the Civil Guard managed to locate it thanks to the statement from the driver himself and the tracking of security cameras in the area. The agents have seized the car for the necessary technical inspection.

The Traffic Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident and determine if the driver may have been drinking or using drugs. Results from the autopsy and toxicology tests performed on the deceased are expected in the coming hours.

The incident has shocked the residents of Capdepera, a tourist town in the Llevant region of Mallorca that sees its population multiply in summer. The road to Cala Mesquida, heavily trafficked by pedestrians and cyclists at dawn, lacks a shoulder in some sections, increasing the risk for those exercising outdoors.

The Capdepera Town Hall has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and has offered cooperation to the Civil Guard. The mayor has reminded the importance of exercising caution on secondary roads and announced that signage in the accident area will be reviewed.

The driver, who has been released on bail, will have to appear before the Manacor investigating court when required. He faces prison sentences of one to four years for involuntary manslaughter and an additional fine for leaving the scene of the accident.

The community of tourists and residents in Capdepera is closely following the case, which has highlighted the dangers of sharing the road between vehicles and pedestrians in low visibility hours. Authorities recommend athletes wear reflective clothing and use designated areas whenever possible.
