The vocal duo Tarta Relena lands in Binissalem to offer a concert that promises to be a ritual. It will take place on July 31 in the garden of the Casa Llorenç Villalonga, within the framework of the La Lluna en Vers festival. There, they will present És pregunta (2024), their third work, which explores tragic thought and humanity's relationship with the future.
An album about impermanence and destiny
The album, entirely produced by the duo, arises from a reflection on how we confront uncertainty. "We were interested in reflecting on how, as humanity, we face the uncertainty of the future and the constant need to want to know what will happen to us," explains Marta Torrella, one of the members. The album features different voices that speak of becoming, from Greek tragedy to tarot or the Sibyl.
For the live performance, Tarta Relena has created a ritual atmosphere. "Our role is, in a way, to personify these characters who face a destiny they do not like or who announce what is about to happen," details Torrella. The concert has toured Europe, the United States, and Central America, and with each performance, it has grown in nuances.
The diversity of languages as a hallmark
One of the duo's characteristics is the use of multiple languages in their songs: Catalan, Spanish, Latin, Italian... "Each language offers us a different colour and sound," states Torrella. In the compositional process, sometimes an idea does not work in one language, but it does in another: "In Mille risposte, the lyrics were initially in Spanish, but when we tried it in Italian, the energy we were looking for appeared." Moreover, each language activates its own imagery: "Whether you understand Catalan, Latin, or any other language or not, each one activates an imagery and a set of different meanings."
The album draws from sources such as Sophocles, Nietzsche, and tarot. "We wanted to explore all these ways that cultures have had to relate to the future," explains the singer.
Self-production and minimalist philosophy
És pregunta is the first album they have produced themselves. The philosophy remains the same: less is more. "We try to use the minimum number of ingredients possible. Some songs are more baroque than others, but we always try to produce a piece and then start removing elements to see if it still works," notes Torrella. The result is a sound in which the voices are the main instrument, and the sound space becomes a theatrical element.
For the concert in Binissalem, the duo will adapt the experience to the garden of the Casa Llorenç Villalonga. "We do not believe it is necessary to reproduce the album as it is. Each space completely modifies the experience," states Torrella. The lighting design and costumes are also adjusted to the venue.
The La Lluna en Vers festival thus offers a unique encounter with the most experimental chamber music. Tickets are already on sale through the festival's channels. An opportunity to be carried away by the voices of Tarta Relena and their particular journey through destiny and impermanence.
