The State Meteorological Agency issues yellow level warnings in Mallorca for temperatures reaching 39 degrees this Saturday and Sunday, with haze and possible storms.
Mallorca is preparing for a weekend of sweltering heat. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has activated yellow level warnings for this Saturday and Sunday due to maximum temperatures that will reach up to 39 degrees in several areas of the island. This heatwave will particularly affect the Llevant i Migjorn region, where the mercury will soar.
Active warnings across the island
According to Aemet, the heat warning will be in effect between 1:00 PM and 9:00 PM in the Llevant i Migjorn regions, with forecasts predicting temperatures of 39 degrees. In the rest of the island, maximum temperatures will hover around 36-38 degrees, with a particular impact in the Pla de Mallorca.
The probability of exceeding the warning thresholds is between 40% and 70%, according to meteorological models. Minimum temperatures will offer no respite: they will remain between 20 and 24 degrees, making nighttime recovery difficult.
The wind will be light, predominantly from the south, although it could intensify during the afternoon. Aemet does not rule out the presence of haze in the southern half of Mallorca, which will reduce visibility and worsen air quality.
Possible storms and showers
The heat and humidity could create instability. Aemet predicts intervals of mid and high clouds, and does not rule out showers and storms in the interior of the island during the afternoon of Saturday. These storms, although isolated, could be locally strong.
Sunday's outlook will be similar. Heat warnings will remain in the same areas, with maximum temperatures again reaching 38-39 degrees. Haze could persist in the south and east of Mallorca.
The highest temperatures are expected in towns like Manacor, Felanitx and Llucmajor, where the thermometer could read 39 degrees. In Palma, the capital, maximums of 36 degrees are forecast, with a thermal sensation even higher due to humidity.
Recommendations for the heatwave
Authorities recommend taking extra precautions, especially between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. It is essential to drink water frequently, avoid direct sun exposure, and refrain from physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day. The most vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children, should be especially monitored.
The Palma City Council has announced that it will keep day centres and libraries open as climate refuges over the weekend. It is also recommended to use sun protection and lightweight clothing.
For tourists and residents planning outdoor activities, Aemet advises checking the updated forecast and avoiding hiking routes during peak heat hours. Beaches will be an option, but with caution and sun protection.
The heat will continue into next week, although with a slight downward trend starting Monday. Aemet does not rule out the activation of new warnings if temperatures remain high.
