The Manacor Town Council promotes the campaign "Here we support breastfeeding" so that bars, shops and public spaces become friendly places for breastfeeding mothers.
The Manacor Town Council, through the Departments of Commerce and Equality, has joined the campaign "Here we support breastfeeding", promoted by the Balearic Association of Breastfeeding (ABAM). The aim is for commercial establishments, bars, restaurants and public administration spaces in the municipality, including Porto Cristo, to join a network of friendly spaces for breastfeeding infants and their families.
The initiative stems from a daily reality: infants eat when they need to, and often the streets do not offer comfortable places to breastfeed. Public benches are not always available, weather conditions can make it difficult, and many establishments are designed exclusively for customers, which can create the feeling that one must consume in order to enter. This campaign aims to normalise breastfeeding in public spaces and eliminate these barriers.
Participating establishments place a visible sticker on the door indicating that any mother can enter, sit down, and breastfeed her baby in peace, without the need to consume. There is no need for a large space or a reserved room: just a place to sit is required, and in the case of establishments with multiple staff, this philosophy should be communicated to the entire team so that families feel welcomed.
The delegates for Commerce, Paula Asegurado; for Equality, Joana Maria Llull; and for Porto Cristo, Antònia Llodrà, have highlighted that this is a "normalising" campaign and have encouraged the commercial sector to join. They emphasised that joining is very simple and can have a very positive impact on the daily lives of many families.
Currently, some shops in Manacor already display the identifying sticker. With the collaboration of the Town Council, the goal is to expand this network of participating establishments in both Manacor and Porto Cristo so that there are increasingly more friendly spaces for breastfeeding.
For families in Manacor and Porto Cristo, this measure represents a practical change in their daily lives: they will be able to go out knowing that there are establishments where they can breastfeed their infants without feeling watched or obliged to consume. Furthermore, it contributes to the social normalisation of breastfeeding, a key aspect for child health and the well-being of mothers.
The campaign also aims to raise awareness among the entire community about the importance of respecting and facilitating breastfeeding in public spaces. Interested businesses and spaces can join by sending a request to the email abamlactancia@gmail.com. Once received, ABAM and the Town Council will provide the sticker and the necessary information for the establishment to effectively offer its support.
The Manacor Town Council makes an explicit call to all establishments in the area, both in the urban centre and in Porto Cristo, to join. The Councillor for Commerce, Paula Asegurado, has emphasised that "this is an opportunity for local businesses to demonstrate their commitment to families and the normalisation of breastfeeding".
