Prosecutors are requesting three and a half years in prison for a driver who, drugged and driving at 165 km/h, caused a fatal accident on the MA-3320 road between Petra and Manacor in June 2021. The trial will take place at the end of this year.

The Balearic Prosecutor's Office is seeking a three and a half year prison sentence for a young man accused of causing a fatal traffic accident while driving under the influence of several drugs. The incident occurred on June 13, 2021, on the MA-3320 road, between Petra and Manacor, and claimed the life of a 47-year-old man.

According to the provisional conclusions of the public prosecutor's office, the accused, who was 23 years old at the time, was driving a Seat Ibiza at a minimum speed of 165 kilometers per hour in a section limited to 90. Upon reaching kilometer 5.2, at a curve, he invaded the opposite lane and first collided with the rear of a Volkswagen carrying a couple and their two young children, who were unharmed.

Despite the impact, the driver did not brake or take any evasive action, even though visibility was good and weather conditions were optimal. Immediately afterwards, the Seat Ibiza collided head-on with a Citroën C3. The driver of this second vehicle, a 47-year-old resident of the Llevant region, died instantly due to the severe injuries sustained.

Positive for Four Controlled Substances

After the accident, the accused underwent an alcohol and drug test that returned negative results. However, samples taken from him at the Manacor hospital were analysed and revealed positive results for cannabis, cocaine, MDMA, and benzodiazepines. The Prosecutor's Office argues that the young man did not have the necessary psychophysical conditions for safe driving due to the effects of these drugs, which impaired his ability to operate motor vehicles.

The public prosecutor charges the accused with crimes of reckless homicide and driving under the influence of toxic drugs. A preliminary hearing was held yesterday in a Palma court where no agreement was reached between the parties, prompting the judge to schedule the trial for the end of this year.

An Incident That Shocked the Region

The accident caused great shock in the areas of Petra and Manacor, where the victim was known. The MA-3320 road, which connects both municipalities, is a busy secondary road frequented by residents and workers from the region. Excessive speed and drug use while driving are recurring problems on Mallorca's roads, and this case has once again highlighted the need to strengthen controls.

For the residents of Petra and Manacor, the trial represents a step towards justice, although the loss of a life cannot be repaired. The judicial process will take place in the Provincial Court of Palma, and it is expected that the parties will present their evidence and testimonies. The victim's family, who is pursuing a private prosecution, is calling for a exemplary sentence.

The accused, who was previously released on bail, now faces a possible prison sentence. Meanwhile, drivers in the region are reminded that a moment's inattention while driving can have irreparable consequences. Authorities recommend exercising extreme caution on secondary roads and remind that driving under the influence of drugs is a serious crime.
