The lack of awnings in the children's playground has overwhelmed the patience of the educational community at CEIP Badies, which has a long list of unresolved incidents since 2023.
The educational community of CEIP Badies in Llucmajor has had enough. The last meeting with the municipal brigade, held on June 29, 2026, was the tipping point: the technicians claimed that the installation of shade awnings in the children's playground fell under vertical actions and that they were overwhelmed with work. With no solution in sight, families believe that "this is the last straw" after years of unfulfilled promises.
A history of incidents dating back to 2023
The conflict is not new. On May 5, 2023, a spotlight in the playground fell outside of school hours, despite families having previously warned of its poor condition. The element was removed and the area closed off, but the rest of the lights were not checked. The result: the sports courts were left with insufficient lighting for months, affecting extracurricular activities and the use of the space during the winter months.
Just a few months later, on July 6, 2023, a technical visit from the General Directorate of Planning, Organisation and Educational Infrastructures produced a report that identified multiple defects. Among them were the deterioration of the perimeter fence — pending for over a decade — dampness in several classrooms, problems in the dining room bathrooms, damaged doors, and a general lack of preventive maintenance. However, the report did not translate into concrete actions.
Unfulfilled promises and a petition campaign
In December 2023, families brought these deficiencies to the School Council and have since reiterated the incidents at every meeting without receiving effective solutions. The situation worsened in December 2024 when a window in the dining room broke, causing glass to fall and forcing a reorganisation of the space. It was the teachers themselves who temporarily secured the area due to the lack of municipal response.
That same month, over 600 people supported a petition campaign demanding urgent actions. In January 2025, families requested to intervene in the municipal plenary session. They were finally invited to a meeting with the mayor, where commitments such as a comprehensive maintenance contract and an investment plan were announced. However, they report that these announcements have not materialised. To date, there is no public information on the tender for the contract, nor an execution schedule, nor any concrete actions underway.
The daily life of students and teachers
Meanwhile, students at CEIP Badies continue to suffer the consequences. The children's playground lacks shade during the hottest months, forcing children to play in the sun. The dampness in classrooms causes peeling walls and, in some cases, unpleasant odours. The dining room bathrooms, according to families, are in a "lamentable" state. And the perimeter fence, with over ten years of deterioration, poses a safety risk that worries parents.
Throughout 2025, new incidents were recorded: windows that do not close properly, recurring dampness, sticking doors, and damaged furniture. Families requested the intervention of the Ministry of Education, which conducted an institutional visit in April of that year. Commitments were made regarding perimeter security, access, porches, and bathrooms. But again, with no visible results.
An uncertain future for the centre
The educational community of CEIP Badies feels "abandoned" by the administrations. As the 2025-2026 school year comes to an end, families wonder if the next school year will begin with the same deficiencies. The lack of awnings, dampness, broken glass, and the dangerous fence are just the tip of the iceberg of a problem that has persisted for years. Parents have announced that they do not rule out further mobilisations if they do not see concrete progress before September.
