The XIX Organic Agriculture Day in Porreres will take place this Saturday, July 11, in the evening, from 19:00 to midnight, for the first time in its history. The mayor, Maria Agnès Sampol, will preside over the event, which includes parades, wine tasting, and a concert.
Porreres is preparing to host the XIX Organic Agriculture Day this Saturday, July 11, which will be held in the evening for the first time, starting at 19:00. The town centre will transform into a large nighttime fair where attendees can discover, taste, and enjoy the organic produce from the Balearic Islands. The event is organised by the Associació de la Producció Agroecològica de Mallorca (APAEMA) and the Ajuntament de Porreres.
The mayor, Maria Agnès Sampol, will preside over the Diada for the first time as the first councillor, although she has already participated in the organisation from the Department of Environment over the last two years. “It is an honour, although I took part in the organisation from the department. This continuity reinforces the commitment of the Ajuntament to the protection of our environment, sustainability, and environmental awareness,” Sampol stated.
A Change of Schedule to Combat the Heat
The main novelty of this edition is the nighttime schedule, a decision aimed at avoiding the high temperatures that affected previous editions. “With this change, we aim to avoid the hot hours and create a more tranquil atmosphere, conducive to enjoying the spaces, products, and activities at a leisurely pace,” the mayor explained. The Diada will kick off at 19:00 and will last until midnight, offering a cooler and more relaxed environment.
The programme includes a parade of xeremiers and giants, the presentation of the Premi Producte Ecològic, a concert by the group Marino Marini, a tasting of organic wines, and a wide range of organic food. The mayor highlighted that “rather than recommending a specific activity, I would invite citizens to enjoy the entirety of the Diada. It is a day that reflects the values of sustainability, respect for the environment, promotion of local products, and love for our territory.”
Porreres, a Benchmark in Organic Agriculture
Organic agriculture is a strategic sector for Porreres, as Sampol has emphasised. “Not only for the quality of the products it offers but also because it directly contributes to the preservation of our landscapes. In Porreres, there is a growing number of organic farmers who work with dedication and commitment, making the municipality a benchmark in the transition towards sustainable agricultural practices,” she affirmed.
The Diada consolidates the collaborative work with APAEMA, an entity that groups producers, processors, and supporters of organic agriculture and agroecology. For the residents of Porreres and visitors, the event is an opportunity to learn firsthand about local products and support an agricultural model that respects the territory. Admission is free, and it is recommended to arrive early to enjoy all the activities.
The concert by Marino Marini, scheduled for 21:00, and the tasting of organic wines are two of the highlights of the night. Additionally, there will be direct sales stalls for organic products, ranging from fruits and vegetables to cheeses and cold cuts. The organisers expect a high turnout, both from residents and tourists, thanks to the appeal of the nighttime schedule.
“As mayor, it is a pride to invite everyone who wants to enjoy a very complete programme,” concluded Sampol.
