Several residents of Alcudia found swallows on the ground unable to fly and brought them to the Local Police. The agents hydrated them with a syringe while the COFIB specialists arrived.

The Local Police of Alcudia attended to several common swallows that had been rescued by residents of the municipality at the end of June. The birds, which showed clear signs of dehydration, were taken by citizens to the police station after it was confirmed that they could not take flight.

The agents activated the wildlife protocol and requested the intervention of the Consortium for the Recovery of Fauna of the Balearic Islands (COFIB). While the technicians were on their way, one of the officers improvised a manual hydration using a syringe, administering small amounts of water gradually to stabilise the animals.

Civic Collaboration Key in Bird Rescue

The police department shared the intervention through its official channels, where they thanked the involvement of the residents who decided to help the swallows. “Without the quick reaction of the citizens, many of these birds would not have survived,” stated sources from the Local Police.

The high temperatures recorded in the region over the past few weeks have caused episodes of dehydration in local wildlife, especially in young or weakened birds. Common swallows, which usually nest in ledges and eaves, are particularly vulnerable during heat spikes.

The agents highlighted that, although such actions are not common in their daily routine, they are part of the public service role they perform. “We are not just here to issue fines or regulate traffic; we also protect the environment and the animals that inhabit it,” they explained.

Wildlife Protocol in Alcudia

COFIB took charge of collecting the specimens for rehabilitation at a specialised centre. Once recovered, the swallows will be released into their natural habitat, likely in a rural area of the municipality of Alcudia.

For residents who encounter a wild animal in distress, the Local Police recommend not handling it directly if they lack experience, and contacting 112 or the police department itself. In this case, the citizens acted quickly and responsibly, facilitating the intervention.

The action has been well received by residents, who appreciate the sensitivity of the agents towards animal welfare. “It’s nice to see that our police also care about the creatures,” commented a resident on social media. The Alcudia Town Hall has confirmed that it will continue to collaborate with COFIB to ensure the protection of local wildlife.
