The Government has begun excavation work on the Comellar Fondo grave in Son Servera to locate and identify possible victims of the Civil War. This intervention is part of the V Plan for Graves.

The excavation work at the Comellar Fondo grave, in the municipality of Son Servera, started this week. The aim is to locate, exhume, and identify possible victims of the Civil War buried in this location, situated next to the Puig de Son Corb, one of the battle sites during the Battle of Mallorca in the summer of 1936.

The Ministry of the Presidency, Coordination with Government Action, and Local Cooperation has reported that this action continues the interventions started this year in the municipal cemetery of Son Servera. With this new phase, the V Plan for Graves advances the investigation of various sites in the municipality linked to the armed confrontations of the early months of the Civil War.

A grave documented by oral testimonies

The Comellar Fondo grave is located on a private estate on the outskirts of the urban area. Its existence has been documented thanks to oral testimonies collected during the historical research work of the IV Plan for Graves. According to these accounts, the site was used to bury combatants who died during the confrontations at Puig de Son Corb, although the identity and number of victims it may contain remain unknown.

The work is being carried out by the UTE formed by the Society of Sciences Aranzadi and ATICS, the contractor for the excavation, exhumation, and identification service of the V Plan for Graves. The intervention combines specialized archaeological and anthropological work, with an initial phase aimed at locating the possible grave through archaeological soundings. If its existence is confirmed, the exhumation of human remains will proceed, followed by scientific and genetic study.

Collaboration of the estate owners

The Government has emphasized that, to carry out this action, the collaboration of the estate owners, Juana María Servera and Juan Servera, has been essential, as well as the family's willingness to facilitate the development of the work. Antoni Torrandell, the spouse of the co-owner, acts as a liaison with the team responsible for the intervention, making it possible for the work to proceed with all guarantees.

The excavation of the Comellar Fondo grave is another step in the recovery of historical memory in Mallorca. For the residents of Son Servera, this intervention represents the possibility of clarifying what happened in their municipality during the Civil War and perhaps restoring the identity of those who lost their lives in those battles. The work will continue over the coming weeks, and the Government will periodically inform about the progress.
