Thousands of people gathered this Tuesday at the Son Fusteret venue to watch the Spain-France World Cup semifinal on a giant screen. The City Council has launched the initiative 'Palma, with La Roja', providing special metro and shuttle bus services.
The Spanish national team is playing for a place in the World Cup final against France this Tuesday, and Palma did not want to miss it. The Son Fusteret venue opened its doors at 18:00, and despite the intense heat, thousands of fans filled the stands to watch the match on the giant screen set up by the Palma City Council. This is the second time in history that Spain has reached a World Cup semifinal, a milestone that the city wanted to celebrate in style.
A warm-up of music and white shirts
The day kicked off with a performance by Jaume Colombàs, who warmed up the enthusiastic crowd. Among the attendees, the white shirt was predominant, the colour chosen by Luis de la Fuente's team for tonight's match (21:00, in Dallas). The atmosphere has been festive, with families and groups of friends seeking shaded areas to escape the sun.
The free access facilitated the massive turnout, although the main drawback has been the heat and difficulties in finding parking. To ease traffic, especially upon leaving, Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) has set up a special metro service with 16 additional trains. Eight trains will depart from the Son Fuster Vell station between 23:15 and 00:25, with a frequency of ten minutes, while another eight will leave from the Intermodal Station between 23:05 and 00:15.
Transport reinforcements and alternative plans
In addition to the metro, the EMT has strengthened the service with a shuttle bus to and from Plaza de España to facilitate travel. Attendees have positively evaluated these measures, although some noted that prior information could have been clearer. "I arrived by car and had to circle three times to find parking," commented a fan while fanning himself with a programme.
If Spain secures a place in the final, the celebration will continue at es Gremi, which has announced that it is fully booked for the match. The venue has announced "the official afterparty with DJ Jaume Colombàs, who will come directly from Son Fusteret, where he will serve as the official speaker for the match, to provide the soundtrack for what could be a historic night." "A night to suffer, celebrate, and experience football as it deserves," they highlight from their Instagram profile.
For those who couldn't secure a spot in Son Fusteret, the City Council reminds that the match can also be followed in bars and clubs around the city. However, those opting for the giant screen will need to be patient for the return: the special metro and bus services will operate well past midnight. The heat is intense, but the excitement of seeing Spain in a World Cup final is worth it.
