The Mallorcan town celebrated its main festival on Thursday with mass, a land procession, and a floral offering at sea. The image of the patroness was transported on the boat 'Cap Salines' before hundreds of faithful.
Port d'Andratx once again demonstrated its connection to the sea on Thursday during the festival of the Virgen del Carmen, patroness of sailors. The day began with a Holy Mass at the local parish, gathering hundreds of people including locals, tourists, and authorities.
Mass and land procession
The celebration began with the Eucharist officiated by the rector of Andratx, mosén Joan Bordoy, who was accompanied by four other priests. During the service, the traditional Salve Marinera was sung, one of the most emotional moments of the day.
The event was attended by the mayor of Andratx, Estefanía Gonzalvo, three consellers from the Balearic Government, as well as representatives from the security forces and numerous faithful. The parish was too small to accommodate all the attendees.
After the mass, the image of the Virgin was carried in procession by the fishermen of the port from the church to the fishing dock. The route, which passed through the streets of Port d'Andratx, was marked by the fervour and devotion of the participants.
Maritime procession and floral offering
Once at the dock, the statue was embarked on the 'Cap Salines', which led the procession of dozens of boats that accompanied it to the mouth of the port. The sight of the boats following the Virgin over the sea was one of the most photographed moments.
Out at sea, the traditional floral offering in memory of deceased sailors was made. The tribute coincided with sunset, creating a particularly emotional image over the western part of Mallorca.
The celebration concluded with the return of the procession to the port, closing a day that, once again, has kept alive a tradition deeply rooted in the identity of the municipality. For the locals, the Virgen del Carmen is not just a festival, but a reflection of their history linked to the sea.
Those who visited Port d'Andratx were able to enjoy a festive atmosphere that combined religion, culture, and gastronomy, with local bars and restaurants offering typical dishes. The next notable event on the local calendar will be the fiesta of Sant Roc, in mid-August.
