The municipality of Calvià inaugurated this Thursday the first phase of the renovation of the Peguera Boulevard, a stretch of 300 metres that includes new asphalt, sidewalks, drainage, and urban furniture. The project, agreed upon with residents and merchants, has received funding from the European Next Generation funds and the tourist tax.
The Calvià City Council put into service this Thursday Phase I of the renovation and improvement of the Peguera Boulevard, the civic axis and tourist heart of the coastal area. The work, carried out during last winter, covers a stretch of 300 metres between the corner with Gavines Street and the start of the boulevard.
The works have included asphalt paving and sidewalk renewal, improvements to the drainage system and the supply network of regenerated water, as well as the installation of new urban furniture and landscaping. The space has also been equipped with cutting-edge technology for its integration into the Smart Tourist Destination (DTI) project, with cameras, parking sensors, and other devices that will allow real-time data management of the space.
The inauguration event was attended by the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, along with his government team; the Minister of Tourism of the Balearic Government, Jaume Bauzá; the Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez; the Government Delegate in the Balearic Islands, Alfonso Rodríguez; and the managing director of the Agency for Tourism Strategy of the Balearic Islands (AETIB), Pere Joan Planas, as well as political, business, and civil society representatives.
Amengual highlighted that “these 300 metres are accompanied by investments coming from all institutions. We are talking about Next Generation funds, ITS funds, and now funds from the Mallorca Council will also be added. It is an achievement of collaboration between administrations.”
The renovation of the boulevard was agreed upon in November 2024 between the city council and hotel, neighbourhood, senior citizen, and merchant associations in Peguera. The project, which will be developed in several phases, aims to adapt this space to the needs of residents and tourists.
“We have this first phase, the second next winter, and we have already requested funds for the third and fourth phases, which we hope to obtain, and from there continue working for the continuous improvement of this very important area,” the mayor advanced.
The works for Phase I had a budget of €3.25 million, of which €2 million comes from the European Union's Next Generation Funds and the remaining €1.25 million from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). Additionally, the renaturalisation of the Pinada has been inaugurated, a project of €600,000 also funded with European funds, which included a stone perimeter wall, the renovation of pathways, and new furniture with benches and picnic tables.
The modernisation of the boulevard will continue next winter. Phase II, already in the bidding process, is expected to begin in November, after the Challenge Peguera sports event. This phase will recover the square on Ratolí Street, which will become a pedestrian garden area integrated into the boulevard environment, with an investment of €700,000 provided by the Mallorca Council's Consortium for Tourist Accommodation.
This consortium is a non-profit public entity that manages the pool of tourist places provided for in the Balearic Islands tourism law. Its income is allocated to rehabilitating tourist areas, incentivising the conversion of obsolete accommodations into social or cultural projects, and promoting competitiveness and the de-seasonalisation of Mallorca's tourist offer.
For the residents of Peguera, the renewal represents a visible change in their daily lives: wider sidewalks, better lighting, and a greener environment. Merchants hope that the improvement will attract more visitors and boost the economic activity of the area. The next phase, which will start in November, will affect the square on Ratolí Street, which will cease to be a thoroughfare and become a space for leisure.
The works have been carried out in winter to minimise disruptions during the high season. With the completion of Phase I, the City Council is already working on the tender for Phase II and on requesting funds for phases III and IV, with the aim of completing the comprehensive transformation of the boulevard in the coming years.
