The Ajuntament de Calvià held an event in memory of Diego Salvá Lezaun and Carlos Sáenz de Tejada, civil guards murdered by ETA in Palmanova on July 30, 2009, on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the attack.
Remembrance and tribute to the victims
The event took place last Thursday and was attended by important authorities such as the mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, Gabriel Le Senne, president of the Parlament de les Illes Balears, and Alejandro Hernández Mosquera, Brigadier General, head of the Civil Guard in the Balearics. Family members of the victims and other citizens were also present.
The attendees laid wreaths next to a new monument in honour of the victims, designed by local artist Carlos Terroba. The work, standing 110 centimetres tall and weighing approximately 207 kilos, features a lighting system in green tones, evoking the uniform of the Benemérita.
This monument was unanimously approved during a plenary session in November 2025, showing the unanimous support of all municipal groups.
Words from the mayor and Diego Salvá's mother
Mayor Amengual expressed the importance of keeping the memory of the victims alive and the pursuit of justice: "We will not relent in the search, capture, and punishment of their executioners." He also highlighted the work of the Civil Guard in the fight against crime and their role in emergency situations, such as the recent forest fires.
Montse Lezaun, Diego Salvá's mother, delivered an emotional speech remembering her son and the relentless fight for justice. "No mother should outlive her child. They took him from me, but what they cannot take away is the love and pride a mother feels for her son." She also emphasised that the memory and remembrance of Diego will remain alive as long as there are those committed to fighting for it.
This event highlights the need to not forget the atrocities suffered and reaffirms the commitment of the Calvià society towards the families of the victims of terrorism.
