After almost three months without significant rainfall, the main springs of Sóller have seen a notable reduction in their flow. The Town Hall has launched a campaign to promote responsible water use among residents.
The landscape of Sóller shows a drier face than usual this summer. The springs that traditionally supply the municipality have sharply decreased in flow after nearly three months without significant precipitation. Although the seasonal decrease is a known phenomenon, this year it presents an intensity that has raised alarms.
The president of the Sindicat de Regants, Guillem Deyà, has detailed that the most significant reduction has been recorded at the font de s’Ullet, where the flow has dropped abruptly in just a few weeks. The font de s’Olla has also reduced its contribution to the point that the water channeled through the irrigation network no longer reaches the area of l’Horta, one of the most important agricultural areas in the valley.
The Nova and Cas Patró Lau springs have ceased to supply water to the municipal network. Their flow is now entirely allocated to the irrigation of crops, a decision aimed at prioritising agricultural activity in a context of scarcity. Currently, the municipality only receives water from the Na Lladonera spring, as explained by Deyà.
In light of this situation, the Town Hall of Sóller has launched a public awareness campaign under the slogan 'Small Actions Make a Difference'. The aim is to involve residents in the preservation of water resources and ensure supply during the driest months of the year.
The council recommends taking short showers, turning off the tap when not needed, using washing machines and dishwashers only when full, avoiding unnecessary water use, and reporting any leaks for prompt repair. These simple yet effective measures aim to reduce domestic consumption at a critical time.
The municipal administration insists that citizen collaboration is essential to face a summer that is expected to be particularly challenging in terms of water. It reminds everyone that every gesture counts to protect the water balance of Sóller and to avoid reaching more serious situations.
Last year, in August, the Town Hall was already forced to apply restrictions – without reaching cuts – due to the decline in water reserves. The governing team hopes that this situation will not repeat itself this summer, but warns that the evolution will largely depend on rainfall and consumer behaviour.
For the residents of Sóller, the situation serves as a reminder of the fragility of the local water system. Dependent on natural springs and sources, the municipality faces a scenario where water management becomes crucial. The coming weeks will be key to determining whether the saving measures are sufficient or if more severe restrictions will need to be adopted.
