The Balearic delegation adds four new medals on the second day of the National Track Championships, held at the Luis Puig Velodrome in Valencia.
The Balearic delegation has experienced another successful day at the Elite, Under-23 and Paralympic National Track Championships taking place at the Luis Puig Velodrome in Valencia. On Saturday, the cyclists from the Islands added four more medals, bringing the total to eight so far. The competition, which began on Friday, will conclude this Sunday with new podium opportunities for the regional team.
Cyclist Xavi Cañellas was the standout of the day, winning gold in the elimination race. He was not the only medal winner for the delegation: Marina Garau secured silver in the same women's event, while Paralympian Joan Sansó, who competed alongside Eloy Teruel, also won silver in the tandem pursuit. The fourth medal of the day came from Joan Martí Bennàssar, who took silver in the individual kilometre time trial.
With these results, both Xavi Cañellas and Joan Martí Bennàssar have now accumulated two medals each in the championship so far. On Friday, in the first day, Bennàssar was crowned Spanish champion in the men's individual pursuit, ahead of his brother Francesc, who took silver, and Cañellas, who won bronze. Additionally, Marga López added a bronze in the women's scratch race, completing an initial quartet that already hinted at the high level of the Balearic team.
The competition, organised by the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation, brings together the best track specialists in the country. The Luis Puig Velodrome, a historic venue for Valencian cycling, has hosted the events for the Elite, Under-23 and Paralympic categories since Friday. The Balearic delegation, under the umbrella of the Federació de Ciclisme de les Illes Balears (FCIB), has become one of the most prominent teams in the championship, with a total of eight medals over two days.
For this Sunday, the final day of the Nationals, the Balearic team hopes to increase their medal haul. The regional team includes Sergi Amengual in elite; Martí Mir, Lluc Dols, Valentina Ferreyra and Nayhara Monserrat in under-23. All of them will be looking to add new medals in the remaining events.
The performance of the Balearic cyclists in Valencia reinforces the positive momentum of cycling in the islands, which in recent years has produced prominent figures in both road and track cycling. The FCIB has invested in the development of young talents, and the results in this championship reflect that effort.
The Valencian event will conclude on Sunday afternoon, when the last finals are held. Cycling fans in Mallorca are closely following the performance of their representatives, who have already made it clear that they are contenders for everything in their respective events.
