A traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday in Alcúdia has left two people injured, one of them seriously. The incident took place on Avenida de Inca, when a young man riding a motorcycle without a licence lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the front of a house. Both the driver and his passenger were injured, with her suffering more severe injuries, necessitating her transfer by ambulance to a hospital, where she remains admitted.
The events occurred around 1:45 AM, according to sources from the investigation. The motorcycle was travelling along Avenida de Inca when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control and violently collided with the wall and door of a house. The impact was so severe that both occupants were thrown off, sustaining various bruises and fractures.
Local Police from Alcúdia were dispatched to the scene of the accident, initiating an investigation to clarify the facts. During the initial proceedings, the officers confirmed that the driver lacked a driving licence, which led to him being investigated as a suspected perpetrator of a traffic safety offence. The lack of a licence is an aggravating factor that can lead to prison sentences of three to six months, fines, or community service.
However, the investigation did not stop there. The police also located the owner of the motorcycle, who apparently knew that the driver did not have a licence. Despite this, he had lent the vehicle to him, and is now also being investigated as an accessory to the same crime. This legal figure punishes those who assist in the commission of an offence, in this case, by providing the means for a person without a licence to drive.
The accident has once again highlighted the risks of driving without a licence, a practice that, although illegal, remains relatively common on the roads of Mallorca. According to data from the Directorate General of Traffic, dozens of cases have been detected on the island this year, many of them involving young people who drive without ever having obtained a licence or who have lost it due to point deductions.
The Local Police of Alcúdia have called for responsibility among drivers and, especially, vehicle owners, reminding them that lending a motorcycle or car to someone without a licence can have serious legal consequences. They have also emphasised the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to avoid accidents like this one, which could have had an even more tragic outcome.
For the moment, the investigation remains open and further proceedings are not ruled out. Officers are gathering testimonies and reviewing security camera footage from the area to determine exactly how the loss of control occurred. The driver and the motorcycle's owner have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary, awaiting the judge's decision on appropriate precautionary measures.
As for the condition of the injured, health sources have indicated that the driver has minor injuries and has been discharged, while his passenger remains hospitalised, although her recovery is favourable. She is expected to be discharged in the coming days, barring any complications.
This incident has caused some alarm among local residents, who have expressed concern about the frequency of accidents on that road. Avenida de Inca is one of the main arteries of Alcúdia, with considerable traffic, especially during the tourist season. Therefore, some residents have requested that the Town Hall strengthen security measures, such as the installation of speed cameras or speed bumps.
The case has been brought to the attention of the investigating court on duty in Inca, which will be responsible for conducting the proceedings. It is expected that hearings will be held in the coming weeks to determine the criminal responsibilities of both individuals under investigation.
