Electricity supply was restored at 1:30 PM on Monday in Can Pastilla and Cala Estancia, after two underground faults left over 2,000 residents without power during the weekend, coinciding with a heatwave.
Technicians from Endesa managed to resume the electricity service in the areas of Can Pastilla and Cala Estancia on Monday afternoon, following a hellish weekend for residents and businesses in Playa de Palma. The first fault occurred on Friday night and the second on Sunday morning, leaving over 2,000 people without electricity in the midst of July with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees.
No Air Conditioning During the Heatwave
The power outage coincided with the third heatwave of the summer in Mallorca, turning the affected homes into veritable ovens. Many residents were unable to use fans or air conditioning units, and expressed their frustration on social media regarding the delay in repairs. "It is unacceptable that in the 21st century we are in this situation," commented a resident of Cala Estancia.
Shops, restaurants, and nightclubs in the area were the most affected. The outage forced them to close during peak hours over the weekend, with losses that some hoteliers estimate to be in the thousands of euros. "We couldn't even open the refrigerators; the food was going bad," explained the owner of a beach bar.
Restauración Mallorca CAEB Demands Accountability from Endesa
The business association Restauración Mallorca CAEB has raised its voice against the electricity company. Its president, Juan Miguel Ferrer, stated that "even the previous week, there had been voltage drops and occasional outages indicating a problem in the network." According to the association, the weekend outages were "total" and left them without lighting or essential equipment such as fryers, extractor hoods, and payment systems.
The legal department of the association, Monlex Abogados, is already studying how to claim economic damages from Endesa. "We are gathering documentation from the affected establishments to assess legal actions," Ferrer explained. The association demands "an immediate and transparent explanation" regarding the causes of the faults and measures to prevent their recurrence.
A Recurring Problem in the Area
This is not the first time Playa de Palma has suffered massive power outages. Residents and merchants recall similar episodes in previous summers, always during the peak season. The electrical infrastructure in the area, they claim, "is not up to par" with tourist demand. Endesa, for its part, stated that teams worked "continuously" until the service was restored, but did not specify the causes of the faults or whether additional measures will be taken.
Meanwhile, those affected are trying to return to normalcy. Bars and restaurants that were able to reopen on Monday afternoon did so with uncertainty about whether the network will hold up for the rest of the summer. With forecasts indicating that high temperatures will continue, no one wants to be left in the dark again.
