The Balearic public television gathered one in every two viewers during the eclipse on August 12 and closed the day with a 13.1% share, its best record since April 2012.

The broadcast of the solar eclipse last Wednesday, August 12, has become a milestone for IB3. The regional channel reached a 48% audience share at the peak of the phenomenon, at 20:19, meaning that one in every two viewers in the Balearics was watching the public channel.

This figure is not an illusion: throughout the day, IB3 recorded a 13.1% share and gathered 217,000 unique viewers. It is the best overall audience figure since April 2012, over fourteen years ago, and comes on a day when the entire community looked to the sky.

The special programme Cinc Dies, which followed the eclipse live from various points across the islands, broke its historical record with a 24.4% share, an average of 45,000 viewers, and 159,000 unique users. The news programmes also benefited from the surge, recording shares of 14.6% and 15.8%.

The eclipse also dominated online

The coverage did not stop at television. IB3's digital platforms accumulated 17,913 views on their eclipse-related content, a 906% increase from the previous day, when only 1,674 were recorded. The digital peak occurred between 20:00 and 21:00, with 4,897 views.

The live broadcasts from Malgrats, Formentera, Menorca, and Ibiza collectively contributed 6,590 views, and the live Instagram broadcast attracted 3,180 viewers and 351 comments.

On social media, the channel posted 235 messages about the event that reached 3,025,000 impressions and 64,310 interactions. These figures confirm the interest generated by a phenomenon that will not be repeated for decades.

The result supports the work of the Balearic public broadcasting service, which coordinated professionals from all its areas for months to provide comprehensive coverage. For the viewers in the islands, the event left a clear message: when something big happens in the sky, IB3 is the window to look through.
