Five trucks have completely burned in the MercaPalma facility. The fire, which spread to nearby scrubland, has forced the evacuation of the Son Banya settlement as a precaution.

A total of five trucks parked inside the MercaPalma facility were completely incinerated by a fire that broke out around three-thirty in the afternoon on Monday. The fire, which started in one of the heavy vehicles, quickly spread to two others and a trailer, although none were inside the industrial buildings, which prevented greater damage to the facilities.

The fire heads towards Son Banya and forces evacuation

The flames reached nearby scrubland and, driven by gusts of wind, moved towards the Son Banya settlement. As a preventive measure, authorities ordered the evacuation of all residents. The Councillor for Citizen Security of the Palma City Council, Llorenç Bauzà, specified that repopulation will not occur until all safety conditions are met.

Repopulation will only be ordered when all safety conditions are met, Bauzà emphasized.

Firefighters from the Palma, Calvià, Inca, and Llucmajor parks are working on extinguishing the fire, supported by the Milana helicopter, Aena firefighters, those from the Son Sant Joan Air Base, and the Balearic Nature Institute (Ibanat).

Palma airport operates normally

Despite the proximity of the fire and the thick curtain of smoke visible from the centre of Palma and the beaches, Son Sant Joan airport has continued to operate without disruptions to flight schedules. The wind has helped to push the flames away from the runways, deactivating the alert that had been initially activated.

The Balearic Health Service (Ib-salut) mobilized several ambulances and mobile ICUs, although only one person had to be treated for an anxiety attack due to the proximity of the fire. Residents of Son Banya are waiting for the firefighting teams to declare the fire under control so they can return to their homes.
