The National Police arrested a man in Palma who, after being reprimanded for his work, threatened the mother of the child he was caring for with a knife. An off-duty local police officer facilitated the escape of the victim and her child.
A caregiver who lived with the mother and the child he was looking after in a residence in Palma was arrested last Friday afternoon after threatening the woman with a kitchen knife. The victim had reprimanded the man for his work performance and had asked him to leave the house, which triggered a violent reaction.
Reprimand that led to threats with a bladed weapon
According to the National Police, the arrested man had been living with the family for several weeks. The child's mother, dissatisfied with the household tasks and the care of her son, urged him to find another place to live. At that moment, the caregiver reacted angrily: he took the woman's mobile phone, went to the kitchen, and grabbed several knives.
With a large knife in hand, the man threatened the mother, saying he would stab her in the chest and then take his own life. Terrified, the woman managed to escape with her child and locked herself in a room. From there, she contacted a neighbour who turned out to be an off-duty Local Police officer.
Pursuit across terraces until the arrest
The local police officer alerted emergency services and entered the residence to facilitate the escape of the mother and child. When he entered, he found the aggressor with a kitchen knife about 20 centimetres long. The man, realizing he had been discovered, fled through the balcony and began a chase across the building's terraces.
Several patrols from the Citizen Attention Group (GAC) of the National Police arrived at the scene. The officers went up to the rooftop and jumped over the walls of up to four terraces to intercept the suspect, who was arrested for an alleged crime of threats.
For the local residents, the incident has caused shock. The swift intervention of the off-duty local police officer prevented the situation from escalating. The arrested man was placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, and it is being investigated whether there were prior conflict records in the home.
The case highlights the importance of coordination between security forces and citizen response in situations of domestic violence. Authorities recommend that anyone feeling threatened contact 091 or 112 immediately.
