The Municipal Transport Company of Palma will launch a special line on August 12 with about 30 buses connecting Plaza de España with s'Arenal to facilitate the observation of the total solar eclipse.
The Municipal Transport Company of Palma (EMT) has prepared a special bus service for next Wednesday, August 12, due to the total solar eclipse that can be observed from the beach. The company will enable a unique line, called "00 - Eclipse", which will operate from 12:00 noon until 2:00 am on the 13th.
The service will consist of about 30 vehicles, mostly high-capacity articulated buses, which will run with an approximate frequency of 5 minutes. The route will start from a provisional stop at Marqués de la Fontsanta, next to Plaza de España, and will reach s'Arenal, with the final stop at Balneario 5, before returning along the same route.
The route will combine the itinerary of line L35 through the neighbourhoods of Molinar, Coll den Rabassa, and Can Pastilla; upon reaching the Aquarium, it will continue along the route of L25, and will end with a detour through Porciúncula and Trobadors street to stop 423. This service will have the usual fare cost, so it will be free for residents who validate the Unique or Intermodal Card.
Due to the expected large turnout, lines L23, L25, and L35 will not follow their usual routes during the special service. Additionally, L25 will experience diversions from the afternoon of Tuesday, August 11, due to police and security deployment at the front line of Platja de Palma, and L23 will operate on a diverted route from 8:00 am on the same day, heading towards s'Arenal.
Other affected lines and access to the airport
The eclipse operation will also partially alter other EMT routes starting from 12:00 noon on the 12th. Lines L18 (towards Palma), L28 (towards Molinar), L31 (in both directions, via Sindicat and Sant Jordi), and L32 (also in both directions, ending at Can Rubert) will experience temporary diversions.
The service to the airport will be maintained throughout the operation, although with changes. Line A2 (Airport-s'Arenal) will run on a diverted route from 8:00 am on August 12 and will have its final stop at stop 1179 at Balneario 5. Line A1 (Airport-Palma Centre) will continue its usual route but may divert via the Ma-19 if congestion requires it, entering the front line without intermediate stops.
EMT recommends that travellers needing to reach the airport start their journey several hours earlier than usual, given the possible traffic complications. It also advises checking detailed notices about diversions on the mobile app, on the website, and at the affected stops.
To facilitate the operation, the company will have mobility assistants at the head of the special line, who will help users and ensure the smooth flow of service during peak hours.
