The third heatwave of the summer is nearing its end in Mallorca. This Friday, the interior of the island will be under an orange alert due to maximum temperatures of up to 40 degrees, but a notable thermal drop and possible showers are expected on Sunday.
The third heatwave of the summer in Mallorca is facing its final hours. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts that this Friday will be the most intense day, with temperatures potentially reaching 40 degrees in the interior of the island, especially in the northern and northeastern regions, which remain under an orange alert for extreme heat.
However, relief is near. According to Aemet, temperatures will begin to drop on Saturday, although the most notable change will occur on Sunday, when a locally significant decrease in mercury is expected along with the possibility of showers accompanied by storms in inland areas. Thus, the third heatwave of the summer comes to an end.
The night from Thursday to Friday has been particularly harsh in the capital. In Palma, the minimum temperature was 28 degrees, making it a sultry night. In most coastal and inland areas of Mallorca, thermometers have remained between 26 and 27 degrees during the early morning, making it difficult for residents to rest.
The higher areas of the Serra de Tramuntana have recorded cooler values: 23 degrees in Lluc and 19 in Son Torrella, providing a respite for those who could take refuge at those altitudes. But for the rest of the island, the nighttime heat has been stifling.
For this Friday, Aemet forecasts a mostly clear sky, with intervals of mid and high clouds in the afternoon, mist, possible morning fog banks, and suspended dust. Daytime temperatures will range between 31 and 40 degrees, with the highest readings in the interior, north, and northeast, where the orange alert will be in effect during the central hours of the day.
The wind will blow lightly or moderately from the south and southeast, a configuration that will maintain the stifling atmosphere and will not help cool the environment. Friday night will again be tropical or sultry, with temperatures not dropping below 20 degrees and exceeding 25 in many parts of Mallorca.
On Saturday, although the heat will remain intense, the orange alert will be downgraded to yellow and will be limited to the interior of the island, where temperatures could still reach 36 degrees. The sky will be cloudy, with a predominance of mid and high clouds, and mist and some fog banks could reoccur during the early hours.
Sunday will be the day of change. Aemet predicts a locally significant drop in temperatures, which could fall below 30 degrees in most of the island. Additionally, showers and storms are not ruled out in the interior, which would provide definitive relief for the people of Mallorca after several days of extreme heat.
For the coming days, the trend is towards stabilization with temperatures more typical of the season, although Aemet recommends staying informed of possible changes. Meanwhile, residents of the areas most affected by the heat, such as the interior and north of Mallorca, should take extra precautions during this Friday and Saturday, avoiding the central hours of the day and staying hydrated.
