Agents of the National Police have arrested a man in Palma accused of corruption of minors. The detainee stored over 2,500 files containing child sexual exploitation material, according to the investigation.
The National Police have arrested a man in Palma as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of corruption of minors, after finding more than 2,500 files of child pornography in his possession. The investigation, coordinated by the Central Cybercrime Unit in Madrid, began as a result of cyber patrols in peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.
Agents from the Economic Crime and Technological Crimes Group of the National Police in Palma received a request for collaboration from the General Police Judicial Commissioner in Madrid. Through monitoring P2P networks, investigators detected that a user in Palma was sharing child sexual exploitation material.
After several months of surveillance, the agents managed to identify the alleged perpetrator and confirmed that he had uploaded and downloaded numerous illegal files. At the time of the arrest, which occurred on Tuesday, electronic devices were seized that contained over 2,500 files, with an approximate volume of 230 gigabytes of data.
The recovered files include videos and images of minors in situations of sexual exploitation. The National Police have stated that the detainee used P2P file-sharing programs to access and distribute the material, which allowed him to contact other users worldwide.
The arrested individual has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary as the alleged responsible for a crime of corruption of minors. The seized devices will be analyzed to determine the extent of the criminal activity and whether there are more victims or accomplices.
The investigation remains open, and agents do not rule out further arrests. The National Police emphasize the importance of citizen collaboration to combat such crimes and encourage reporting any signs of child sexual exploitation through official channels.
This case adds to other similar ones in the Balearic Islands, where security forces are intensifying online surveillance to protect minors. The possession and distribution of child pornography is punishable by up to four years in prison under the Spanish Penal Code.
Residents of Palma have expressed their dismay at the news, although the investigation has been conducted discreetly. The National Police wanted to convey a message of calm and trust in police work.
