Agents of the National Police have arrested a man who attempted to squat twice in the home of an elderly woman in the Palma neighbourhood of Son Gotleu. The man was carrying a wrench and tools to change the lock.
Agents from the National Police's Citizen Attention Group arrested a man for breaking and entering after he tried to squat twice in the home of an elderly woman in the Son Gotleu neighbourhood of Palma. The events occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the 091 emergency line alerted the patrol that a man was forcing entry into an apartment.
Two attempts to access and struggle with the officers
In the first intervention, the police did not find the suspect at the scene, but a witness indicated that he had seen him trying to access the property, which belonged to an elderly woman who was not at home. The officers withdrew, but minutes later received another alert: the same man was attempting it again.
Upon arriving again, the officers observed the door slightly ajar. When attempting to enter, the assailant resisted from inside, leading to a struggle. Eventually, the man surrendered and allowed the police to enter.
Inside the home, the officers found the arrested man holding a wrench. Additionally, the door showed clear signs of forced entry, with damaged locks and a broken frame. Next to him were a crowbar, three screwdrivers, and a new lock, which he presumably planned to install to replace the original.
The home was inhabited by other people
The police confirmed that there were signs inside the residence indicating it was being occupied by other individuals, unrelated to the arrested man. For all these reasons, the man was arrested as a suspected perpetrator of a breaking and entering offence.
For the residents of Son Gotleu, this incident again raises concerns about squatting in the neighbourhood. The swift action of the National Police and citizen collaboration were key in preventing the elderly woman's home from being illegally occupied.
The arrested man has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary, while the home has been secured awaiting the owner's return in peace. The police remind the importance of alerting 091 regarding any suspicious activity in properties.
