The political party denounces failures in the air conditioning of health centres while the maintenance contract with Ib-Salut has been expired for two and a half years.
The deputy of Més per Mallorca, Marta Carrió, appeared this Thursday at the health centre of Pere Garau, in Palma, to denounce that at least 13 health centres on the island lack air conditioning during the heatwave. The political party describes the management of the Govern de Prohens as "negligent" and demands the urgent renewal of the maintenance contract with Ib-Salut, which has been expired for two and a half years.
Failure in the air conditioning of health centres and hospitals
According to the list compiled by Més, the affected centres are spread throughout Mallorca. In the Part Forana, the health centres of Pollença, ses Salines, Sóller, Alcúdia, Andratx, Binissalem, Porto Cristo, Felanitx, and Capdepera have reported total or partial failures in their air conditioning systems over the past few weeks. The Hospital de Manacor is also experiencing issues. In Palma, the health centres of Son Cladera-La Vileta and Pere Garau suffer from a lack of cooling.
Carrió highlighted that the issues at the Pere Garau health centre are not new: "Users tell us that since January they have had problems, first with heating in winter and now with air conditioning," she noted. The deputy lamented that both professionals and patients have to endure "unbearable indoor temperatures" in waiting rooms and consultations.
Maintenance contract expired for two and a half years
The origin of this situation, according to Més, is not coincidental. The party revealed that the global maintenance contract for the Health Service of the Balearic Islands (Ib-Salut) expired two and a half years ago and has not yet been renewed. "Public health cannot be sustained on the basis of headlines in the press," Carrió criticized, demanding the immediate tendering of a new contract to urgently resolve the failures.
For the deputy, the Govern de Prohens is "the one that has increased investment in health" the least in the autonomous community, which she describes as "absolute neglect" in the care of health infrastructures. Més has urged the Conselleria de Salut to act immediately to prevent the situation from recurring every summer.
Consequences for patients and healthcare staff
The lack of air conditioning directly affects the quality of care. Patients, who already arrive weakened by various conditions, must wait in rooms with high temperatures, while healthcare staff work under extreme conditions. Marta Carrió emphasized that "professionals cannot be forced to perform their duties under these deplorable conditions."
Més reminds us that the current heatwave is one of the most intense and prolonged in recent years in the Balearics, further exacerbating the situation. The party has announced that it will take the case to the Parlament and will remain vigilant to ensure that deficiencies are addressed.
For now, users of the affected centres will have to continue enduring the high temperatures until Ib-Salut activates an emergency plan. Més demands that the tendering of the new maintenance contract be prioritised and that provisional measures, such as the installation of portable cooling units, be established while the structural problem is resolved.
