The Plenary of the Ajuntament de Palma will approve this Thursday the transfer to the Govern of a 70,000 m² plot in Son Llàtzer Vell to build IES Son Ferriol, a school with capacity for 1,247 students and an investment of 20 million euros.
The Ajuntament de Palma will take a key step this Thursday towards the construction of the future IES Son Ferriol, by approving in the Plenary the transfer to the Govern of the Balearic Islands of a municipal plot of over 70,000 square meters located next to the Hospital Universitari Son Llàtzer. The new educational centre, demanded by the neighbourhood for more than three decades, will have a planned investment of 20 million euros.
The agreement, the result of coordination between the City Council and the regional government, will allow the transfer of ownership of the Son Llàtzer Vell land so that the Govern can begin construction. The plot already has the necessary service provision, and both institutions presented the construction draft during this legislative term, responding to a historic demand from the Association of Mothers and Fathers of CEIP Son Ferriol and the local residents.
The future IES Son Ferriol will have the capacity for 1,247 students in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training. Specifically, it will have six lines of ESO (780 places), three lines of Baccalaureate (210 places), and a UEECO classroom with seven places for special education. Additionally, it will include a wide range of Vocational Training linked to the Agricultural family, with a Basic Degree cycle in Agro-gardening and Floral Compositions; three Medium Degree cycles (Agricultural Production, Gardening and Floristry, and Utilisation and Conservation of the Natural Environment); and a Higher Degree cycle in Livestock and Animal Health Assistance. In total, Vocational Training will add up to 250 places.
The project was declared an investment of regional interest in September 2024, which speeds up administrative procedures. The construction of the institute is part of a set of strategic actions in the Son Llàtzer area, including the future train line between Palma and Llucmajor and the new Palma fairgrounds, whose winning project has already been presented by the City Council.
Furthermore, the Ajuntament will also transfer the houses of the possessió of Son Llàtzer to the Govern for the establishment of future socio-health equipment, thus reinforcing public services in the neighbourhood. For the residents of Son Ferriol, the establishment of the institute will mean the end of decades of commuting to other educational centres in Palma and the region, finally having their own IES to meet the demand for secondary and vocational training places in the area.
This Thursday's municipal Plenary will give the green light to the transfer, a necessary administrative step for the Govern to tender the construction works. Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, once the urban planning and contracting procedures are completed. Residents and the educational community have been demanding this infrastructure for over 30 years, which is now coming to fruition thanks to the agreement between administrations.
