Queen Sofia attended a cultural event on Monday at the Teatro Real in Madrid, the last before moving to Palma de Mallorca for her summer holidays at the Palacio de Marivent.
Queen Sofia has concluded her official agenda in Madrid with an event at the Teatro Real, and all signs point to her heading to Palma de Mallorca in the coming days to begin her traditional summer holidays at the Palacio de Marivent. This will be her first stay on the island without her sister, Irene of Greece, who passed away on January 15.
On Monday, the mother of King Felipe VI presided over a conference on the contributions of Bernardo de Gálvez and Francisco de Saavedra to the American Revolution, organised by the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute. The event is part of the "America&Spain250" initiative, of which the Emerita holds the Honorary Presidency, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
Following the talk, the musical piece "Gálvez Fantasy" was premiered, dedicated to Bernardo de Gálvez, a key figure in Spanish support for the independence of the Thirteen Colonies under the reign of Charles III. Queen Sofia surprised attendees with a large brooch in the shape of a red carnation on the lapel of a beige two-piece outfit, paired with a satin brown top and a white handbag.
A summer of reflection in Marivent
This year, Queen Sofia's stay in Mallorca will be particularly emotional. The absence of her sister Irene, who usually accompanied her at the Palacio de Marivent, will mark her days on the island. Sources close to the Royal Household indicate that Queen Sofia will maintain a low profile, with family gatherings and occasional outings, as is customary during her holidays.
The Palacio de Marivent, located in the Cala Major area of Palma, has been the summer residence of the Royal Family since the 1970s. Each summer, the emeritus queen typically spends several weeks there, combining rest with social and cultural events on the island.
For the residents of Palma, the arrival of Queen Sofia is a summer tradition. Although her presence does not disrupt the city's routine, it does generate some activity in the Marivent area, with enhanced security measures and the occasional curious onlooker approaching the palace entrance to catch a glimpse of her arrival.
A Spanish event in the history of the USA
The conference at the Teatro Real highlighted Spain's role in American independence. Bernardo de Gálvez, governor of Louisiana, and Francisco de Saavedra, royal commissioner, were crucial in aiding the rebellious colonies. The "America&Spain250" initiative aims to spread this history in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of independence, which will be celebrated in 2026.
Queen Sofia, who has presided over the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute since its founding, has demonstrated her commitment to promoting Spanish culture and history in the United States. The institute, based in New York, promotes educational programs and scholarships for Spanish and American students.
The musical piece "Gálvez Fantasy", composed for the occasion, was another highlight of the event. The work, which combines classical and popular elements, aims to bring the figure of Gálvez closer to the general public.
Once these commitments are concluded, Queen Sofia will take a well-deserved rest in Mallorca. The locals will see her strolling around Marivent, perhaps at a terrace in the area, enjoying the climate and tranquility of the island. Of course, she will be wearing a red carnation on her lapel, which has become her summer signature.
