The association of bars and restaurants reports repeated power outages between Can Pastilla and Balneario 6 during the weekend of July 17 to 19, which forced closures or reduced service during the peak season.
The power cuts are relentless in the tourist area of Playa de Palma. The employers' association Restauración Mallorca CAEB has raised its voice after a disastrous weekend for local hospitality: between Friday, July 17, and Sunday, July 19, dozens of establishments suffered total blackouts during service, just as the tourist season reaches its peak.
According to data collected by the association, the incidents were concentrated in the stretch between Can Pastilla and Balneario 6, with particular severity on Saturday, July 18. The cuts were not merely momentary drops in voltage: the supply completely disappeared at several points, leaving businesses without lighting, with fryers and extractor hoods stopped, and with refrigerators and freezers disconnected. The result was the forced suspension of service or a drastic reduction in activity.
A disastrous Saturday for local hospitality
Saturday, July 18, one of the busiest tourist days of the year, turned into a nightmare for the hospitality sector in Playa de Palma. Numerous bars and restaurants had to close or operate at half capacity, resulting in loss of income and the inability to preserve perishable food. "These were not momentary fluctuations, but total cuts that halted activity," explained the employers' association. On Sunday, July 19, incidents continued, although with less intensity.
The situation has raised all alarms in the sector. Juan Miguel Ferrer, president of Restauración Mallorca CAEB, has expressed his "utmost concern" over the possibility of these episodes recurring in the coming weeks, just as the high season is at its sweetest moment. "The stability of the electricity supply is essential to ensure food safety and customer service," he emphasised.
Endesa under scrutiny from the employers' association
The association, advised by the law firm Monlex Abogados, has directly pointed to Endesa or the company in its group responsible for distribution as the likely culprit for the blackouts. Although technical confirmation is pending, the employers' association has already begun to gather documentation: incident reports, photographs, invoices, technical reports, and a detailed account of damages to equipment, spoiled goods, and loss of revenue.
"We demand an immediate, complete, and transparent explanation regarding the origin of the incidents and the measures to prevent them from happening again," Ferrer demanded. The claim, according to the legal department, could include both material damages and economic losses, as well as other detriments arising from the service interruption. Those affected do not rule out taking legal action if the company does not provide a satisfactory response.
More than economic losses: the image of the destination
The impact of the cuts goes beyond the pockets of business owners. Playa de Palma is one of the main tourist attractions in Mallorca, and these blackouts during the peak season project a "severely damaging" image of the destination, according to the employers' association. "The tourists who experienced the situation will not forget the experience, and that harms the reputation of the entire sector," lamented Ferrer.
Restauración Mallorca CAEB is calling for urgent and coordinated action with the authorities to ensure the continuity of service throughout the area, from Can Pastilla to Balneario 6. Meanwhile, hospitality owners are crossing their fingers that the nightmare does not repeat itself next weekend.
