The municipality will be one of the official observation points for the total eclipse. The Son Matamoros circuit will welcome visitors with a special security setup.
On August 12, Felanitx will become one of the main venues in Mallorca to witness the total solar eclipse, a phenomenon that will not occur again for decades. The Balearic Government has included the municipality in its official security and logistics plan, and the chosen point for mass observation will be the Son Matamoros circuit, as confirmed by Mayor Catalina Soler.
The choice of this space is due to its large capacity, the ease of managing access, and its clear horizon to the west, which is key for observing an eclipse that will occur with the Sun very low on the horizon. The venue will limit its capacity to a maximum of 800 vehicles, at which point the entrances will be closed.
The security setup includes an increase in Local Police, which will double its usual services with ten officers, in addition to the presence of the Civil Guard, Civil Protection, and private security. There will also be an ambulance, portable toilets, and water sales points within the venue.
One of the most sensitive points will be the Puig de Sant Salvador, whose vehicle access will be completely closed from 3:00 PM, allowing only the passage of vehicles belonging to guests with reservations at the hotel. The mayor has insisted that the sanctuary is not a suitable place for observation due to lack of visibility and has urged citizens to avoid blocking the main roads of the region.
To facilitate the arrival of those who choose to walk from the urban centre, the maximum speed on the access road will be reduced to 20 kilometres per hour for two or three hours. Authorities recommend, however, observing the eclipse from home whenever possible to avoid travel and crowds.
The Felanitx City Council has called for civic responsibility, with an absolute ban on smoking throughout the venue due to the risk of fire and high temperatures. Attendees are also asked not to leave waste, especially glass or plastics, in the area.
The eclipse will begin with the partial phase at 19:38, reach totality at 20:31, when the Moon will completely cover the Sun and day will turn to night for approximately one and a half minutes, and will end at 20:49, coinciding with sunset.
