The solidarity movement 'I am You' is organising a touring flamenco dance initiative through the streets of Manacor to raise funds and create a shelter and a social dining hall in the locality.
Three flamenco dancers will tour the streets and squares of Manacor in a touring initiative of the solidarity movement 'I am You'. The aim is to raise funds for the establishment of a shelter and a social dining hall in the municipality.
The proposal, which will take place over the coming weeks, seeks to involve citizens and local businesses in a cause that aims to address the needs of homeless individuals or those at risk of social exclusion. The artists will perform at various points in the urban centre, such as the Constitution Square, the street dels Horts, and the area around the municipal market.
A solidarity show on wheels
The dancers, dressed in flamenco costumes, will perform classical and contemporary pieces for about 15-20 minutes at each location. At the end, they will pass through the audience with a donation box to collect voluntary contributions.
According to sources from the 'I am You' movement, the idea is for the show to be “a moment of joy and awareness” that invites residents to contribute. “We do not ask for a fixed amount, but rather for each person to give what they can,” they explain.
The organisers have planned for the performances to be repeated over several weekends, adapting to the availability of the artists and the response from the public. They are also considering the possibility of adding more volunteers if the initiative is successful.
A shelter and a dining hall for Manacor
The money raised will be entirely allocated to the creation of a shelter and a social dining hall in Manacor. The project, still in its initial phase, aims to provide a space that offers beds and hot meals to those in need.
“We want no one to sleep on the streets in Manacor,” the movement states. The initiative arises from the recognition that, although there are assistance resources in the region, demand exceeds supply, especially in winter.
The movement's leaders are in talks with the Manacor Town Hall to find a suitable location and comply with municipal regulations. At the moment, there is no specific date for the opening, but they are hopeful that donations will allow them to take the first steps before the end of the year.
How to contribute and upcoming performances
In addition to donations during the street performances, the 'I am You' movement has set up a bank account and an online micro-donation platform. They also accept non-perishable food and warm clothing, which will be collected at the same performance locations.
The dance schedule will be announced through the collective's social media and the Manacor Town Hall. The first performance will take place this Saturday at 11:00 in the Constitution Square.
Residents who wish to volunteer to help with the organisation or future management of the shelter can contact the movement through their Facebook page. The initiative, which combines art and solidarity, aims to become a benchmark for citizen participation in the Llevant region.
