The new coach of Real Mallorca, Luis García Fernández, set foot on the island for the first time this Sunday, where he was welcomed by the sports management. The Oviedo-born coach will begin pre-season on Monday with the medical tests for the squad.
The Oviedo-born coach landed at Son Sant Joan after seven in the evening, coming from Granada, where he had enjoyed his last days of vacation. Sergio Marty, a member of the club's technical secretariat, was there to welcome him and take him directly to the Son Moix offices. This was Luis García's first face-to-face contact with the club since his signing was announced on June 22.
“I am very excited and eager to return to a place where I have been very happy,” declared the coach as soon as he set foot on Mallorcan soil. The memory of his time as a player for the team during the 2004/2005 season, now 21 years ago, is still very present. That season, Mallorca was in the First Division, and Luis García, then a midfielder, made a good impression on the fans.
A project aimed at returning to the top
The goal of the new project is none other than a return to the elite. Last season's relegation has left a deep mark on the island, and the board has entrusted Luis García with the task of bringing Mallorca back to the First Division. The 45-year-old coach expressed confidence in the roadmap set by the sports management: “I have a lot of confidence in the club and in the sports management. People are working hard to create a great project.”
So far, the transfer market has only brought one new face: Adrián Fuentes. In contrast, the list of departures has been much longer, and just a few days ago it was extended with the departure of Leo Román. When asked about the few signings, Luis García was cautious: “We need to take it step by step and build a good team; the category is very difficult.”
First steps on the pitch
This Monday, the squad will undergo medical tests, which will continue on July 6 and 7. On Wednesday, the Oviedo-born coach will put on his work overalls to lead his first session on the Son Moix pitch. This will mark the start of a pre-season that is crucial for getting a team that wants to quickly forget the bitter taste of relegation back on track.
For the Mallorca fans, Luis García's arrival brings a dose of optimism. The coach knows the club, understands what it means to wear the red shirt, and above all, knows the demands of a fanbase that does not forgive. The challenge is enormous, but the Oviedo-born coach arrives with the lessons learned from his time at Las Palmas, where he left a good impression before deciding to embark on this new adventure.
The coming days will be intense in the Son Moix offices. The sports management, led by Pablo Ortells, is working against the clock to finalize the signings that Luis García needs to build a competitive squad. The coach, for his part, has already made it clear that he wants a team “that competes in every match” and that brings back the hope to a fanbase dreaming of promotion.
