The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) in the Balearics has downgraded the alert for heavy rain and storms in Mallorca from orange to yellow. The warning will be in effect until 16:00 this Sunday, two hours less than initially expected.
According to Aemet, precipitation of up to 25 litres per square metre is expected in one hour, a figure lower than the 40 litres forecast earlier in the morning. Despite the downgrade, authorities recommend caution due to the possibility of intense showers and storms.
A significant downpour has already been recorded in Sóller this morning, and in the Port of Andratx, the rain has surprised tourists. Emergències 112 has urged the public to take extra precautions and to call 112 in case of emergency.
The Palma City Council has announced the closure of the parks of La Ribera, Can Terrers, and Passeig Sagrera from 12:00 to 16:00 as a preventive measure. Citizens are advised to avoid these areas during the alert period.
The bad weather is also affecting Palma airport, where flight delays are being reported, according to Aena. Air traffic controllers have indicated that air traffic regulations are being implemented due to adverse weather, although these are not widespread delays.
The weather forecast indicates that conditions will improve throughout the afternoon, with skies tending to be mostly clear. Daytime temperatures will drop significantly in some areas, and winds will be light to moderate from the north and northeast, shifting to an easterly component in the afternoon.
Emergències 112 reminds the public that, in case of any incident, they should contact the emergency phone number. They also advise against parking vehicles in flood-prone areas and to avoid crossing streams or risky areas.
