The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has confirmed that July 2026 was the hottest month in the Balearic Islands since the historical series began in 1961. The average temperature of the archipelago was 28 degrees, with an anomaly of 2.9 degrees above normal, making it an extremely warm month across all the islands.
In Mallorca, the average was 28.2 degrees, the same as in Formentera, while Menorca recorded 28 and Eivissa 27.9. Aemet highlights that numerous stations across the archipelago recorded monthly average temperature records, some in series dating back to the 1940s and 1950s.
The month was marked by two heatwaves in Mallorca, between the 5th and 12th and between the 18th and 23rd, and one in Eivissa, from the 6th to the 9th, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees. The absolute maximum of the month was recorded in Pollença, at 41.1 degrees, while in Eivissa, 40.2 degrees were reached in Sant Joan de Labritja and Sant Antoni de Portmany.
Warm and very warm days skyrocketing
Aemet has observed a notable increase in warm days, those with temperatures of 30 degrees or more, and very warm days, above 36 degrees. In many places, these values have doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled compared to normal.
In Mallorca, all 31 days of July were warm at stations such as Palma Porto Pi, where the normal is 14, or the Son Bonet airport, with 31 compared to the usual 28. In Eivissa and Formentera, all automatic stations recorded 31 warm days, as in Sant Joan de Labritja, where the normal is 23.
Very warm days also broke records. In Binissalem, 21 days above 36 degrees were recorded, compared to the normal 6, and in Llucmajor, 20, when the usual is 5. In Eivissa, Sant Joan de Labritja added 14 very warm days, compared to an average of 2.
Tropical and sultry nights
Nights did not offer any respite either. In Mallorca, towns such as Palma Porto Pi, Llucmajor, Santanyí, Portocolom, Capdepera, Pollença, and Cabrera recorded 31 tropical nights, meaning minimums above 20 degrees. In Capdepera, sultry nights, with minimums over 25 degrees, reached 26, an absolute record since 1989, when the normal is 3.
Also notable were the 18 sultry nights in Banyalbufar, which represents another record, and the 13 in Sóller. In Menorca, La Mola and Mercadal reached 31 tropical nights, and in Formentera, 29 were recorded.
The lowest minimums of the month were recorded in Escorca Son Torrella, with 12.6 degrees on the 29th, while in Cala Galdana (Menorca) it reached 17.4 degrees. As for precipitation, the month was dry, with 66% less rainfall than usual across the Balearics.
Aemet emphasizes that these values confirm an upward trend in summer temperatures in the archipelago, with increasingly intense and prolonged heat episodes. Complete data for the month is available on the agency's website.
