An Audi A3 was completely burnt out on Monday after igniting while travelling on the road connecting Palma with Andratx, near the first roundabout on Havana Street. The driver managed to stop the vehicle on the roadside upon noticing that the flames were spreading rapidly, but the fire ultimately consumed the car and reached the surrounding vegetation.
Emergency intervention on Havana Street
The incident occurred shortly after 12:00 PM, when the car was about to merge towards Andratx. The driver, who was unharmed, exited the vehicle on his own before the fire got out of control. The flames were so intense that they forced traffic to be cut in both directions to ensure the safety of the emergency teams and drivers passing through the area.
Two patrols from the Andratx Local Police were the first to arrive at the scene. The officers attempted to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers, but the intensity of the flames prevented them from controlling it. Minutes later, two units from the Mallorca Fire Brigade arrived at the scene and began firefighting efforts. The operation also included a patrol from the Traffic Civil Guard, which assisted in traffic regulation and actions stemming from the incident.
The mayor visits the scene
The mayor of Andratx, Estefanía Gonzalvo, visited the site to get firsthand information on the evolution of the incident and the development of the operation deployed by the emergency services. Municipal sources confirmed that the fire affected a nearby plot of land, whose owner has been located and has provided a statement to the officers.
The firefighters worked for hours to cool the area and prevent the flames from reigniting. Traffic remained closed until it was ensured that there was no risk of new hotspots. Residents in the area were able to resume normal circulation by late afternoon, although caution is advised due to possible debris on the roadway.
Advice to prevent vehicle fires
The Local Police remind the importance of periodically checking the electrical and fuel systems of the car, especially in vehicles several years old. If smoke or flames are detected, the first step is to stop the vehicle in a safe place, exit the vehicle, and call 112. One should not attempt to extinguish a fire with homemade means if the flames are intense. For drivers passing through the area, it is recommended to pay attention to signage and reduce speed in sections where such incidents have occurred, as the asphalt may have damage or combustion remnants.
