The municipality of Calvià has launched four hiking routes certified as Small Route Trails (PR-MA), the first in Mallorca to receive this certification, covering a total of 21.6 kilometres through the Finca Pública Galatzó and connecting the coast with the interior.
Calvià has taken a firm step towards tourism diversification with the certification of its first four small route trails, the first in all of Mallorca to receive the PR-MA certification from the Balearic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing. The network, which totals 21.6 kilometres, runs largely through the Finca Pública Galatzó, where the Town Hall has invested 5.7 million euros in rehabilitating the historic houses of the possessió.
The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, presented the initiative as "a firm step towards a more sustainable tourism model," capable of generating economic activity year-round and bringing visitors and residents closer to the municipality's natural and historical heritage. The focus on active tourism aims to reduce dependence on traditional sun and beach tourism and attract travellers outside the high season.
Four routes for all levels
The network includes itineraries adapted to different levels of difficulty. The route between Peguera and Es Capdellà, measuring 5.8 kilometres, connects the coast with the interior, passing through pine forests and ancient paths. The so-called Vall Verda, at 5.9 kilometres, offers a circular route through Mediterranean forests and ancient possessions.
In the Finca Pública Galatzó, the Sa Vinya itinerary, measuring 6.5 kilometres, traverses ancient agricultural paths and allows visitors to discover the ethnological and archaeological heritage of the estate. The Font de sa Cometa route, at 3.4 kilometres, is designed for families and focuses on ancient hydraulic systems and the traditional dry stone landscape.
The trails have been marked following the criteria of the Path and Hiking Route Signage Manual of the Mallorca Council, which enhances the safety and orientation of hikers and regulates the use of the natural environment. Additionally, the Town Hall has published 6,000 informational brochures in three languages, available at the municipality's tourist offices, and has updated information on the Visit Calvià platform, where users can consult maps, elevations, and download the routes in GPS format.
A pioneering project in Mallorca
The president of the Balearic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing, Xisco Fanals, emphasised the pioneering nature of the project: these are the first certified PR trails in Mallorca, a recognition that guarantees standards of quality, safety, and environmental conservation. The network constitutes the first phase of a project that the Town Hall plans to progressively expand to other areas of the municipality and is part of the tourism diversification strategy presented earlier this year during FITUR.
For the residents of Calvià, these routes represent an opportunity to rediscover the interior of the municipality and enjoy natural spaces such as the Finca Pública Galatzó, which has seen a multi-million euro investment in rehabilitation. The trails are now open to the public and can be accessed free of charge. The Town Hall recommends wearing suitable footwear, bringing water, and using sun protection, especially during the summer months.
