Aemet has activated a yellow heat warning in the Balearic Islands, which will turn orange on Wednesday. The risk of wildfires is already very high or extreme in several areas of Mallorca, with Friday being the most dangerous day.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has raised the wildfire danger level in Mallorca to very high and extreme categories for this week, coinciding with the heatwave affecting the archipelago. This Monday, the most affected areas are Migjorn, the south of the island, and part of the Nord region, where the risk is extreme.
The risk extends across the island from Tuesday
Looking ahead to Tuesday, the alert intensifies and expands to parts of Ibiza, while in Mallorca the danger spreads throughout the Pla, Llevant, and the Serra de Tramuntana. On Wednesday, almost the entire interior of Mallorca will present an extreme risk level, according to Aemet's prediction models.
On Thursday, most of the island, except for some interior and coastal areas, will remain at this critical level. The peak is expected on Friday, July 10, when the risk map will show almost all of Mallorca at an extreme level, except for the coast, the Bay of Palma, and parts of the north and northeast.
A respite is expected on Saturday, although the very high level will remain in several areas. On Sunday, the risk will concentrate again in the Pla, but without reaching the levels of midweek.
Recommendations from the Govern in light of the heatwave and wildfire risk
The Balearic Govern has called on the public to take extra precautions, especially in activities that could generate a wildfire. It is recommended to avoid any use of fire in the countryside, as well as during the central hours of the day when temperatures will exceed 39 degrees in some areas.
Authorities remind that the emergency phone number 112 is operational 24 hours a day to address any incidents or concerns. Additionally, they stress the importance of following self-protection advice against heat, such as staying hydrated and avoiding direct sun exposure.
For residents in the most affected areas, such as the Pla or the Serra de Tramuntana, special care is advised with barbecues or the use of agricultural machinery that could generate sparks. A lapse in attention under these conditions could trigger a large-scale fire, warn Emergencies 112.
Forecast for the weekend: a slight respite
Saturday will bring partial relief, although the risk will remain very high in many regions. On Sunday, the danger will concentrate in the Pla, but with levels lower than those on Friday. Nevertheless, authorities urge not to let their guard down, as drought conditions and high temperatures persist.
In summary, this week will be crucial for wildfire prevention in Mallorca. Friday is set to be the most critical day, and the Govern is calling for maximum citizen cooperation to avoid disasters.
