Actor Michael Douglas has shared on Instagram his visit to the Sa Bassa Blanca museum in Mallorca, where he resides for much of the year. The estate S'Estaca, in the Sierra de Tramuntana, has been his refuge since the 1990s.
Michael Douglas has once again demonstrated his love for Mallorca. The 81-year-old American actor posted a video on Instagram this Thursday praising the Sa Bassa Blanca museum on the island. "It’s incredible and fabulous," he says in the footage, recorded during his stay at the estate he owns in Valldemossa.
Douglas has lived in Mallorca for decades. His home, the estate S'Estaca, is nestled in the Sierra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The property, built in 1867 by Archduke Luis Salvador of Habsburg, spans over 100 hectares and is valued at around 30 million euros.
A mansion with vineyards, a garden, and views of the Mediterranean
The house features 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a swimming pool, spa, wine cellar, and cinema room. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, it produces its own wine. Additionally, there is a garden that Douglas boasts about on social media: "My tomatoes are the best," he jokes in some of his posts.
The property is located between the municipalities of Deià and Valldemossa, two of the island's most emblematic villages. For the locals, the actor's presence is commonplace: "He goes shopping at the market like anyone else," sources from the Valldemossa Town Hall comment. "He’s just another local, always greets and is very friendly," they add.
From purchase to legal dispute: the story of S'Estaca
Douglas acquired the estate in 1990 with his then-wife, Diandra Luker. After their divorce in 2000, they shared the property in alternating six-month periods for over two decades. In 2014, the actor attempted to sell it, but Luker refused. It wasn't until 2021 that Douglas managed to buy the entire estate.
Today, the actor shares the mansion with his second wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones. The couple enjoys the tranquility of the island, away from the noise of Hollywood. "Mallorca is my second home," Douglas has stated on several occasions. "Here I find peace, privacy, and security."
The Sa Bassa Blanca museum, which Douglas visited this week, is managed by the Ben Jakober Foundation and Yannick Vu, close friends of the actor. The space houses a collection of contemporary art and is one of the island's cultural attractions. For the residents of Valldemossa, the actor's visit is a reminder that their village is a magnet for celebrities.
"Having Michael Douglas live here gives us visibility, but it also reminds us of how special our surroundings are," says a spokesperson for the Town Hall. "The Sierra de Tramuntana is unique, and for someone like him to choose it as a home is a source of pride."
The estate S'Estaca is not open to the public, but its vineyards and olive groves are visible from some nearby trails. Tourists visiting Valldemossa can find in local shops the wine produced by the estate, one of the area's hallmarks.
