A 36-year-old worker suffered a fall from four metres while waterproofing the roof of the Valldemossa sports centre. The floor gave way and the man lay inside, being transported by ambulance to Son Espases, where he remains in the ICU in very critical condition.
A 36-year-old worker is in very critical condition after falling from a height of four metres while working on the roof of the Valldemossa sports centre. The accident occurred around 4:30 PM on Tuesday, when the roof's floor gave way beneath his feet and he fell into the storage area.
The victim, along with another worker, was performing waterproofing tasks on the roof of the sports centre, located at 16 Pintor Josep Coll Bardolet street. They were placing concrete and tiles to prevent water leaks when the incident occurred. The hole that opened was large, and the worker fell into the void with no chance to grab hold of anything.
An emergency response was immediately activated. Health services from Ib-salut arrived at the scene in an ambulance, as well as members of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard to investigate the workplace accident. The medical personnel found the patient without vital signs and had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation to stabilise him.
On-site resuscitation and transfer to Son Espases
After the fall, the worker lay on the floor of the storage area. Staff at the sports centre opened the door to allow the medical personnel to access. The Ib-salut doctors immediately began resuscitation efforts, as the patient had gone into cardiac arrest. They managed to restore his vital signs and transported him in the ambulance to Son Espases hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Sources from the hospital indicate that the worker has not improved and his condition remains very critical. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the accident and determine if there were any irregularities in safety measures.
The local police station in Valldemossa, located just a few metres from the sports centre, was closed at the time of the incident due to a lack of officers from staff cuts. They only had two police officers, who had already completed their shift, so they could not intervene in the rescue.
Investigating possible safety failures
The Civil Guard has taken charge of the investigation to determine whether occupational risk prevention regulations were followed. The worker, who has not been identified, was engaged in roof waterproofing, a task that requires protective measures such as harnesses and lifelines. The agents will analyse whether the appropriate equipment was used and if the roof's floor was in optimal condition.
This workplace accident once again highlights the accident rate in the construction sector in the Balearics. According to data from the CCOO union, in 2025 there were 15 serious workplace accidents on the island, of which 3 were fatal. Falls from height are one of the main causes of accidents in the sector.
The Valldemossa sports centre remains open to the public, although the storage area where the accident occurred has been cordoned off for investigations. The Valldemossa Town Hall has expressed its dismay at the incident and hopes for the worker's recovery.
Local residents have expressed surprise at the incident, as the sports centre is a very busy place. Fortunately, at the time of the fall, there were no users in the vicinity of the storage area. The accident could have resulted in fatalities if the worker had not received immediate medical attention.
The investigation is ongoing, and it is expected that the exact causes of the incident will be clarified in the coming days. Meanwhile, the worker continues to fight for his life in the ICU of Son Espases.
