The mayor of Sóller, Miquel Nadal, and the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, supervised the shoring works at Sa Fàbrica Nova on Thursday, an urgent action with an investment of 1.5 million euros.
The mayor of Sóller, Miquel Nadal, accompanied by several councillors, and the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, visited the consolidation works being carried out at Sa Fàbrica Nova on Thursday. The intervention, declared an emergency, aims to ensure the stability of the building while the comprehensive rehabilitation project is drafted to convert it into the future Museum of Textiles of Mallorca.
During the visit, the institutional representatives were able to check the progress of the works, which consist of the installation of an internal support structure to consolidate the three buildings of the complex, as well as the placement of a provisional roof to prevent water ingress, one of the main causes of the building's deterioration.
The action has an investment of 1.5 million euros from the Consell de Mallorca and is part of the urgent measures adopted following the acquisition of the building. These tasks continue the initial works carried out in recent months, such as cleaning the space, improving the perimeter enclosure, the controlled removal of one of the bodies in a state of ruin, and the cataloguing of machinery and heritage elements.
The delegation was led by the president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, the first vice president and executive councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, the executive councillor for Finance, Innovation and Public Function, Rafel Bosch, and the island director of Heritage, Maria Isabel Arnau, along with technicians from the island institution.
From the Sóller Town Council, the mayor, Miquel Nadal; the councillor for Education, Andrea Pomar; the councillor for Infrastructure and Public Roads, Carlos Darder; and the councillor for Social Services, Llum Castañer, participated.
Sa Fàbrica Nova is a cultural asset that represents one of the main testimonies of the industrial past of the Vall de Sóller. The aim of the emergency works is to preserve the building while the final rehabilitation and restoration project is drafted, which will allow it to house the Museum of Textiles of Mallorca, preserving both the structure and its valuable original machinery.
The Sóller council has expressed gratitude for the commitment of the Consell de Mallorca to the recovery of this historic building. They state that the action will preserve a symbol of local industrial heritage and convert it into a new cultural reference space for the island.
The shoring works, which will extend over the coming months, are the first step to ensure the survival of the architectural complex. Once the emergency phase is completed, the comprehensive rehabilitation project will be tendered, the execution timeline of which has yet to be determined.
For the residents of Sóller, the recovery of Sa Fàbrica Nova represents the enhancement of an emblematic space that was the economic engine of the locality for decades. The future museum will not only preserve industrial memory but will also generate a new tourist and cultural attraction in the region.
