On Wednesday, August 12, the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca will have a special security operation coordinated by the Army and Civil Guard. Traffic on the Ma-10 will be restricted from 3:00 PM.
The Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca will experience an exceptional day on Wednesday, August 12, due to the solar eclipse, and the authorities have prepared an unprecedented security operation. The Army and Civil Guard will deploy special units in the area to ensure order and safety during the astronomical phenomenon, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors.
According to the Balearic Command, from this Monday, August 10, until August 14, the Land Operational Command (MOT) will deploy a section of the Balearic Tactical Subgroup in Mallorca. This unit, part of the Filipinas battalion of the Palma 47 regiment, will carry out foot and motorised patrols in Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Deià, Valldemossa, Escorca, and Fornalutx.
The MOT, under the command of Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, is the body of the Armed Forces responsible for planning and conducting these operations, which aim to detect threats in advance and facilitate an immediate response to any incidents.
Traffic Restrictions and Access Control
On the day of the eclipse, mobility control will intensify from 10:00 AM, with continuous monitoring of attendance and traffic. From 3:00 PM, or earlier if circumstances require, general traffic on the Ma-10 will be restricted, allowing only access for residents, those who can prove the need to reach their accommodations, essential services, and regular public transport.
The Civil Guard will deploy a large operation that includes the Traffic Group, Citizen Security patrols, Seprona agents, Maritime Service, GEAS, Fiscal and Border patrols, the Pegaso Team to intercept unauthorised drones, GRS units, and the Air Service (CUCO). The body will carry out an intense informative and preventive effort to raise awareness about safety and minimise the risks of high concentrations of people in natural spaces.
Authorities recommend planning trips in advance, consulting official pages for preferred observation points and exclusion zones, avoiding unnecessary travel, and following agents' instructions. They also advise parking only in designated areas and bringing enough water, food, and fuel in case of possible delays.
Fire Prevention and Eye Protection
Civil Protection has reminded that lighting fires is strictly prohibited in the area, and has asked not to park vehicles on dry vegetation, keep access clear for emergencies, and check the daily fire risk level.
To safely observe the eclipse, it is emphasised to use only glasses certified according to ISO 12312-2, verifying their authenticity and inspecting the filters before use. Authorities also urge to supervise minors and people with disabilities at all times. "Do not look through cameras, binoculars, or telescopes without a specific solar filter. Do not use improvised filters. Opt, if possible, for indirect projection methods," the authorities add.
