Manacor and sa Pobla are bearing the brunt of the second heatwave in Mallorca, with perceived temperatures exceeding 45 degrees. Aemet warns that the worst is yet to come on Thursday.

The second heatwave of the year in Mallorca has put Manacor and sa Pobla in the spotlight, where the combination of high temperatures and high humidity has driven the perceived temperature up to 45.6 degrees. The deputy spokesperson for Aemet in the Balearics, Jorge Rodríguez, confirmed that this record was reached in the capital of Llevant, while the town of sa Pobla recorded 45.3 degrees.

An unusually long heatwave

Rodríguez highlighted that this heatwave is being "unusually long", as the usual average is four days, and it began on July 5, already accumulating ten days. For much of this period, the north and northeast of the island have been under yellow or orange alert for high temperatures.

The interior of Mallorca is also suffering severely. Municipalities such as Binissalem, Sineu and Petra exceeded 40 degrees last week, as did towns in Llevant like Llucmajor. These values are well above the 30 degrees typical for this time of year.

Thursday, the most critical day

Aemet's predictions warn that the worst is still to come. After a slight respite this Tuesday, with a yellow alert only in the interior, this Wednesday the whole island will be back on alert: orange in the interior, north and northeast, and yellow elsewhere. Thursday, July 16, will be the most sweltering day, with maximums expected of 41 degrees inland, which has activated the orange alert in that area, as well as in the north and northeast; the rest of the island will be under yellow alert.

Jorge Rodríguez anticipates that the heatwave will end this Friday, July 17, although temperatures will remain very high, with maximums of up to 40 degrees inland. A drop in daytime temperatures is expected on Saturday, especially in the northern half of Mallorca.

Recommendations for residents

In light of this situation, authorities recommend that residents of Manacor, sa Pobla, and other affected municipalities avoid sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to the elderly and children. The town halls have set up cooling spaces in civic centres and libraries for those in need. The orange alert indicates a significant health risk, so extra precautions are advised.
