The Palma Court has sentenced a worker from a Sa Pobla branch to one year and three months in prison for appropriating over €300,000 from clients between 2010 and 2014. The accused admitted the facts and has already returned all the money.

A 54-year-old bank employee was sentenced this Tuesday by the Palma Court to one year and three months in prison for appropriating over €300,000 from the clients of the Sa Pobla branch where she worked. The woman, who has confessed to the crimes, initially faced a prosecution request of five years in prison, but the sentence was drastically reduced after she returned the money and due to delays in the process.

Eleven Years of Judicial Waiting

The case began more than eleven years ago, which has been key to the reduction of the sentence. The prosecution noted two highly qualified mitigating factors: undue delays in the procedure and the reparation of the damage, as the accused has fully returned the amounts taken from the bank.

The bank, for its part, had already compensated most of the affected clients, who saw their savings disappear without warning. For the residents of Sa Pobla, this case has been a reminder of the importance of regularly reviewing bank transactions.

Withdrawals Without Consent

Between January 2010 and April 2014, the employee made numerous cash withdrawals and transfers to her account without the clients' knowledge. At times, she herself signed the authorisations or simply did not leave any documentary evidence. Furthermore, she operated from her own terminal and, when possible, from the computers of absent colleagues.

The mechanics were simple but effective: she took advantage of her access to clients' funds to divert them to her own assets. The crime of aggravated misappropriation in conjunction with forgery in a commercial document has been proven following her confession.

Suspended Sentence and No Criminal Record

The court has suspended the execution of the prison sentence for two years, on the condition that the convicted person does not reoffend. As she has no criminal record and the sentence is less than two years, the woman will avoid imprisonment as long as she complies with the agreement.

Additionally, she has been imposed a fine of three months at a rate of six euros per day. There is no civil liability as the money has already been returned. The sentence is final, as neither party has announced an appeal.

For the clients of the Sa Pobla branch, the case closes a chapter of distrust that lasted more than a decade. The banking entity has strengthened its internal controls to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
