A judge in Palma has sentenced a 51-year-old man to 21 months in prison for abusing his wife for a decade and whipping his two children, aged 10 and 14, with a belt in a municipality of Llevant, Mallorca. The sentence has been suspended on the condition that he does not reoffend and complies with the distancing measures.
A magistrate in Palma issued a 21-month prison sentence yesterday for a 51-year-old man of Ukrainian origin, who admitted to having abused his wife for a decade and having whipped his two children, aged 10 and 14, with a belt at their family home in a municipality of Llevant, Mallorca. The events occurred before May 2025, according to the ruling.
The aggressor, who initially faced a prosecution request for six years in prison, accepted the charges in a trial held at the judicial headquarters on Vía Alemania, in Palma. The prosecution reduced its request after considering the mitigating factor of damage repair, as the man deposited 500 euros before the trial to compensate the victims. The accusations, including that of the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS), agreed to the settlement, which avoided the need for an oral hearing.
A decade of violence and humiliation
According to the ruling, the convicted man subjected his wife to ongoing physical and psychological abuse since approximately 2015. The woman was locked in the kitchen and subjected to constant threats and belittlement. The children also suffered abuse: the man whipped them on the back and thighs and imposed humiliating punishments, such as making them kneel on the floor for several hours while insulting them with names like “curva”, “putilla” or “mentally ill”.
The Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs declared the minors to be in a state of neglect and took over their custody. For over a year, the children have been living in a shelter, separated from their parents. The sentence includes a prohibition on approaching or communicating with his wife and children for five and a half years, as well as the use of an electronic monitoring bracelet for the first six months.
Suspended sentence and conditions
The court imposed on the man 21 months in prison, 168 days of community service, and the deprivation of the right to possess and carry weapons for three years. However, the prison sentence was suspended for a period of two years, on the condition that he does not commit further offences, undergoes a programme for equal treatment and non-discrimination, pays the compensations, and complies with the distancing orders.
As civil liability, the convicted man must compensate his three family members with 400 euros each. The man, who had been married for almost 20 years, confessed to the acts and accepted the sentence, which is now final. The judge announced the sentence in voce following the agreement between the parties.
For the local residents, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting domestic violence. IMAS reminds that there are support resources available, such as the phone number 016, for victims of abuse. The sentence, although suspended, imposes follow-up measures aimed at protecting the family and preventing reoffending.
